Time to say goodbye-for-now to my Christmas spider, which hangs on my front door every December. She doesn't usually make it this far into January but I needed the holiday cheer to linger a bit beyond Epiphany. * No, this isn't an homage to The Nightmare Before Christmas but I know why some of my clients think so. It's actually a variation on a traditional decoration which originated in the Ukraine. If you don't know the story of the Christmas spider, here's a version of th...e little-known folktale: * A poor widow lived with her children, struggling to make ends meet. When one of the children found a pine cone and brought it home, it fell to the floor and soon broke through the boards, taking root as a tree. The family cared for it as it grew, knowing it would become a tree by Christmas. When a spider emerged from the tree, the widow wanted to toss the spider out but the children stopped her because the tree had become the spider's home. So, every day, the widow would get up and say good morning to the spider, accepting it as one of her own household. When Christmas came, the children were sad because they could not afford to decorate the tree. The next morning, they woke up and saw the tree covered with webs. When they drew their ragged curtains, the first rays of sunlight touched the webs and turned them into silver. The widow and her children were overjoyed. HAIR & THE IDEAL, PART I - During puberty, my ideas about a hairy, masculine ideal were balanced, in part, by the variety of male images that came at me through more intellectual studies; I was fascinated by renaissance sculpture. Partly, no doubt, it drew me in because of the homoeroticism that dominated mythological depictions of men. * I can't recall where I first saw Baccio Bandinelli's Hercules & Cacus - which art book I was paging through for depictions of the male f...orm - but I saw it in person outside the Palazzo Vecchio of Florence when I was traveling in college. Having seen it only in books, I had had no idea of its immensity. For a young, gay guy whose sexuality was finally blooming the view was, shall we say, transfixing? * Depictions of smooth bodies in ancient and Renaissance sculpture fit nicely with my work as a sugarist. After all, I'm here to remove your hair. The appeal of a smooth body may seem to contradict the pleasure I take in my own hair. But humans are all full of contradictions. Can anyone deny the sexual appeal of the ripe, round shapes of Hercules' body? Of the smooth grandeur of his immense buttocks? Of the enticement suggested by the deep cleft, and the shadowy uplift of his subgluetal folds? These are made all the more erotic by being hairless. * The appeal of this sculpture has less to do with musculature and more to do with curves, roundness, and a ripe, waiting sexuality: the power underneath the flesh, brought closer to the observer by that flesh being smooth. * Your decisions when it comes to hair removal are personal. One can imagine Hercules' butt, if this sculpture were human, just as enticing if it were full of fur.
