Townsend Harris Alumni Association 28.06.2021

Congratulations to Dr. Selina Lee ‘98, who will be awarded this year’s Townsend Harris High School Founders’ Award at tomorrow’s graduation ceremony in honor of her many years of service to Townsend Harris High School and Townsend Harris Alumni Association. Selina is the first graduate of the reestablished Townsend Harris High School to receive this honor. Selina has been an extremely active member of the Alumni Association for over 15 years. She became an officer in 2011, b...ecoming Co-President in 2014 and transitioning to Chairperson in 2019. She was our first Asian-American Co-President and Chairperson. She has been a guiding force in virtually every aspect of the Alumni Association’s operations, from spearheading reunion and other event planning, to serving as the Alumni Association’s representative to the School Leadership Team, to her participation in the recent Do Better Together initiative. Selina also served on the C-30 committee that selected Brian Condon as the school’s current principal. She has been a constant presence in the school. After graduating from Townsend Harris in 1998, Selina attended Cornell University where she obtained a B.S. in Civil Engineering, an M.Eng. in Civil Engineering (Structural) and a PhD in Civil Engineering (Civil Infrastructure Systems). Since then, she has worked with numerous organizations in various engineering roles. For over a decade, she has been a Research Scientist at Validus Research, where she focuses on catastrophe research and model development. Selina lives in Queens with her husband Danny and her two children, Ollie and Kate. Please join us in congratulating Selina on this honor.

STATEMENT FROM BRIAN CONDON, PRINCIPAL OF TOWNSEND HARRIS HIGH SCHOOL ABOUT THE PASSING OF FOUNDING PRINCIPAL MALCOLM LARGMANN Early this week I learned of the passing of Dr. Malcolm Largmann, the inaugural principal of the re-established Townsend Harris High School. Dr. Largmann was small of stature but he was a Titan of intellect and determination. Although I only knew him for a short time, I find myself in awe each day I serve as the principal of this amazing institution ...of learning in our city. What he built and what this institution has come to represent is unmatched in New York City, dare I say the nation. Thousands of students have enter the halls of his school and thousands have exited as scholars ready to leave their city greater than they found it. Appropriately, his name hangs over our library, the hub of knowledge and learning. Also appropriately, his name faces my office reminding me daily of what I am obliged to live up to. Dr. Largmann is the standard by which all other principals are measured: we all have fallen short. He was an exceptional principal, a dedicated teacher, and most importantly, a good man. I only wish I knew him longer. We all owe Dr. Largmann a debt of gratitude. Please take a moment to honor his life and his commitment to improving the lives of others, many of whom he never met. May he Rest In Peace. Brian Condon

We are saddened to inform you of the passing of founding principal Malcolm G. Largmann. Dr. Largmann passed away peacefully in his home last night. Dr. Largmann was instrumental in the reestablishment of Townsend Harris in 1984, having been the first person hired after the decision to reopen the school after over 40 years of closure. His leadership led to Townsend Harris quickly becoming one of the best high schools in the state, achieving a National School of Education des...ignation within five years of its opening. He was loved by faculty, parents and students. He was an outstanding educator and humanitarian. Prior to leading Townsend Harris, Dr. Largmann was an English teacher and department chair at Lafayette High School and Tilden High School. He retired from Townsend Harris in 2001 after a 40+ year career. We will be having a memorial service in the near future where Dr. Largmann’s friends and family can pay their respects. We will keep you posted. In lieu of flowers, you may contribute in his name to Townsend Harris Alumni Association (https://thaa.org/pay_dues2.html) or St. Jude’s Medical (Donate now to St. Jude and help kids fighting cancer - St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital (www.stjude.org)). Please see the below video where Dr. Largmann discusses his time at Townsend Harris. https://thaa.org/pg/videos.html#Largmann
