It’s zongzi time, no better opportunity to understand the diversity of culture within the Chinese diaspora than to compare contrast zong. We hope T!C will be back to teaching our Kitchen Classes at @essexmarket in time for the next #Dragonboatfestival but for now, here is a little run through a few different My mom makes her Hokkien style bak zhang in a pyramid shape with soy sauce pork belly, sausage, chestnuts, braise shiitake, and dried shrimp. My Fuzhou neighbor on... Henry St make these pointy smaller that really lets the bamboo leaf flavor shine through. Alice’s aunt from Toisan makes zong in a flatter twisted rectangular shape. The flavor is focused on the dehydrated seafood goodies like shrimp and scallop, with salted duck yolk, peanuts and mung bean. There are so many family recipes across the Asian diaspora but no matter what, it’s sticky, it’s tasty, and requires quite a bit of gongfu to make. What shape and flavors does your family make? #zongzi #chinesediaspora @grandteaimports

Tuan Yuan, or reunion, looks a little different this year, so we're bringing the party to you! We've partnered with our longtime friend @pearlrivermart on our special Tuan Yuan Homecoming Box, filled with all the materials you’ll need to participate in T!C’s virtual New Year programs (plus, you’ll also find some fun goodies from PRM!). A beloved neighborhood gem, Pearl River Mart has been home to many of our community events, including the Everyday Chinatown Artifact Exhib...ition, various author readings, and last year's Lunar New Year Reveal Party. (We’ll definitely miss that little art space in PRM Tribeca!) Grab a Box for yourself and your loved ones now, so you can do these activities and celebrate the Spring Festival together while apart! Proceeds will go directly toward supporting our non-profit so we can continue our work of storytelling, arts, and neighborhood engagement. www.thinkchinatown.org/tuanyuan-box Here are some photos from last year's Lantern Reveal Party for @yaoxiaoart's Zou Ma Deng "Creativity Engine" during Lunar New Year celebrations #supportchinatown #lunarnewyear #chinesenewyear #lantern #communityevent #communityart #chinatownnyc

Our Tuan Yuan Homecoming Box is now available @pearlrivermart www.thinkchinatown.org/tuanyuan-box We're bringing the party to you this year with our Tuan Yuan Homecoming Box since we can't celebrate together at our annual banquet fundraiser! Our virtual T!C Lunar New Year programming is free/pay-as-you-wish to the public, but your purchase of a Homecoming Box will help support our Chinatown nonprofit - plus, it’s a great way to celebrate the Year of the Ox together... while apart. Proceeds will go directly toward upcoming projects so we can continue our work of storytelling, arts, and neighborhood engagement. We believe the process of listening, reflecting & celebrating builds the inter generational community cohesion and trust necessary to take on larger neighborhood issues like advocating for the restoration of 70 Mulberry (our historic community center that suffered a fire last year), pushing for equity in covid-relief and other resources (LMI Storefront Program), and fighting the Mayor’s plan for a mega-jail at 125 White St. Thank you for your continued support and we're looking forward to when we can celebrate with you in person again! For now here are a few photos from the past 4 years of T!C programming. #chinatownnyc #nonprofitfundraiser #nycnonprofit #communityorganization #thisiswhatcommunitylookslike #lunarnewyear2021 #supportchinatown #supportlocal #thinkchinatown #virtualholidayparty #freeprogramming #communityevents

LISTEN: Unreleased podcast, How To Be American www.thinkchinatown.org/how-to-be-american (link in bio) In the final chaotic days of this administration, conversations about what it means to be American is as pressing as ever. This interview was recorded on the eve of the pandemic shutdown, before our world shifted. In a cozy recording studio, in close quarters, host of Tenement Museum’s podcast "How To Be American," Amanda Brennan, interviews me about my own family's immigr...ation, why I love Chinatown so much, and how Think!Chinatown came to be. I spoke about Americans' amazing ability for grassroots movement, unknowingly foreshadowing the surge of community support in Chinatown for the months to come. Like so many cultural institutions, the pandemic has been a difficult time for our neighbors at the @thetenementmuseum. Please take a moment to check out their virtual program and see how you can support. The production of the podcast has been put on hold, but in the time being we thought we’d bring you excerpts from this meaningful interview. Thanks for Listening & Stay Safe! #thinkchinatown #podcast #interview #museumpodcast #immigrantstories

#AssemblyforChinatown has officially made it to 2021 We are building again in #Chinatownnyc, and if you want to see us continue to build at no cost to #Chinatown businesses in need please consider contributing to our Assembly for Chinatown fund CLICK THE DONATE BUTTON OR SEND SUPPORT HERE: https://secure.givelively.org//crea/assembly-for-chinatown After a busy summer / fall season we started to rethink how we could transition into the wintery months, specially as we bec...ame concerned that outdoor winterization could be misinterpreted as indoor outdoor-ization (probably not a word but you know what we mean )So our first response has been to assess our existing sites to make sure they are still safe and working according to business owners' needs. This first one was about adding a structurally safe roof to the @grandteaimports / delights wong shared space. Turns a out, a big roof goes a long way, specially on a small budget. built by the powerhouse team of Rachel and Winston from @chaosbuiltllc, made cool with art by @jiazilla, designed by @aplusaplusa and tied all together by @thinkchinatown.
