6 Areas of Health We tend to think of health as one overall category in our life. But what if our health is more dynamic than that? The National Health Institute promotes the following six dimensions of wellness:... Physical health is about taking care of our bodies! Probably where your head immediately goes when you think health. When our health is strong in this area; we regularly exercise, we are mindful of what we put in our bodies and we limit excessive consumption. Occupational health is about finding satisfaction and enrichment in our lives through our work. When our health is strong in this area, we are contributing our unique gifts and skills to a job that is personally rewarding. Emotional health, the ability to manage our feelings and related behaviors, is essential to overall wellness. When we are emotionally healthy we are able to recognize and accept our feelings instead of denying them. Social health encourages relationships, community, and a connection to our environment. When we are socially healthy we think of not just ourselves, but we contribute to the common good of the environment around us. Spiritual health recognizes that we thrive through meaning and purpose. This area of health helps us identify our values and beliefs. If we are spiritually healthy, we live consistently with our personal values instead of living in a way that feels inauthentic. Social health encourages relationships, community, and a connection to our environment. When we are socially healthy we think of not just ourselves, but we contribute to the common good of the environment around us. This model helps us recognize the interconnectedness of Wellness. Everything from what we think, and who we surround ourselves with impacts our physical bodies and overall health.

Diabetes and Eye Health- Diabetic Retinopathy Test your Diabetes and Eye Health knowledge: How Often Should People with Diabetes schedule comprehensive dilated eye exams?... a. Once a month b. At least once a year c. Every other year The answer is B! People diagnosed with diabetes should schedule a comprehensive dilated eye exam at least once a year as they are at risk for developing the condition called Diabetic Retinopathy. Diabetic Retinopathy effects the retina and can cause loss of vision and total blindness. This condition has minimal to no symptoms in its early stages, which is why regular eye exams are important in preventing or delaying loss of vision. People with any kind of diabetes: type 1, type 2 or gestational, are at risk for this condition. This condition is caused by excess blood sugar that is a result of diabetes. Check out the basics of a few methods of meditation. Have you tried any of these? Mindfulness Method - The goal is to calmly focus on the present moment. ... - Try doing this by being mindful of your breath for 15 minutes, relaxing your inner emotions and thoughts. - Try doing this in a calm and peaceful place, avoiding noisy distractions. Zen Method - Similar to mindfulness meditation, zen meditation involves focusing and relaxing your mind. However, the zen method is done with your eyes open, focusing on one physical external object. - Zen method uses specific seating postures and breathing techniques. Qigong, or Active Meditation - Uses concentrated breathing, basic hand movements and physically moving to relax the mind. - This type of meditation increases blood flow to the body. Mantra Meditation - Uses a "mantra", or a phrase that you repeat to set an intention and keep you focused. - For example, repeating "I am peace. I am calm" aloud or in your head while sitting in a comfortable position with your eyes closed. Which type of meditation are you interested in hearing more about? Let us know in the comments.

Tips on how to stay mentally healthy during this pandemic! 1. Be gentle with yourself, we are all grieving the loss of life as we knew it. Now is the time to share your feelings with others and the shared experience of knowing you are not alone will help the healing process. 2. Implement mindfulness in your everyday routine - the benefits of yoga and meditation to our mental and physical health are significant. It is well known that meditation increases grey matter in the p...refrontal cortex, which is responsible for reasoning and thinking - both tools we need to combat anxiety. 3. Remember that your breath is the gateway to the present If you feel yourself getting anxious, focus on your body cues. "Is your heart racing? Are you breathing quickly and chest-breathing mostly? Are you tense? Are your hands clammy?" If so, it is time to start some deep breathing. 4. Create routines. Having a consistent routine even for just five minutes will help ground you, getting out of your pajamas can be part of your routine. Getting dressed, even while we are home, will help you get into the right mindset for the day ahead. 5. Spend time thinking positive thoughts. Do your mind and body a favor by thinking positively, maybe by listening to an inspirational podcast, turning up your favorite song, or doing a five-minute dance-off. Anything that gets you shaking off those bad vibes. At the end of the day, it can help to make a list (in your head or written down) of 5 things that make you happy every day. Not only is it a good reminder of our blessings, but it can also lower your stress response and anxiety.

Whether you are a beginner or an advanced skier, you first have to start with a great instructor. Now imagine, you can’t see a thing. You received your lesson, sat on a chairlift to the top of the hill, and now wait for the instructor to give the all clear. This is what Vermont Adaptive sports program does every February for Third Eye Insight Blind Athletes and for Blind Athletes across the country. ... Each athlete is provided with three volunteers, two volunteers ski your perimeter to insure that you don’t crash into the woods, or other skiers. The third volunteer in this party is the instructor. The instructor’s job is to guide you safely down the hill by telling you when to turn and when to stop. The instructor’s job is also to make sure that you have a great experience. How can you not, you are scared and excited at the same time. I understand that it may not happen this year because of obvious reasons; however, check-out some photos from our past trips and you’ll see just how much fun it was for all of us. See more

I recently read a great article about how to reset your healthy eating after overindulging this Thanksgiving. It's basic advice we all know yet I found it helpful when broken down into 6 simple steps: 1. Get back to your normal eating schedule. Best to eat breakfast within an hour of waking and remaining meals 3-5 hours apart. 2. Reconfigure your portions, the old adage "less is best" applies here. Start off with a small portion and pay attention to how you feel before automa...tically reaching for seconds. 3. Get more potassium - not only does it help our muscles and nerves function, and help regulate blood pressure, it also helps with de-bloating by releasing excess sodium. 4. Drink more water - this too will help flush out excess sodium which helps with bloating. 5. Be mindful when eating, slow down, pay attention to how your body is feeling to avoid overeating. 6. Most importantly - increase your activity. We all know the importance of increasing our exercising, even if it means dancing in your living room! I hope these post-Thanksgiving tips help you reset your metabolism and mindset.

One of the best ways to get a full body workout is in the pool. My preference is water aerobics. Although we are using Styrofoam dumbbells, the water provides the resistance to get a great workout. This type of exercise is excellent for all ages and all abilities. It helps to build the cardio and muscular system, while removing stress on the joints which also helps with range of motion. ... We are very fortunate to have excellent water aerobics instructors at the YMCA. The instructors keep us motivated while pushing us and reminding us to listen to our own bodies. These photos are of Third Eye Insight students’ pre Covid-19 time. With all the safety regulations, we are hoping to get back into the pool as a group in the very near future. See more

I recently heard a Tiktok video posted by Will Smith speaking to a Rumi quote that reads: "Set your life on fire, seek those who fan your flame, those who nourish and inspire you" This really spoke to me as I firmly believe that the people we surround ourselves with have a major impact on our consciousness and energy levels. I'm grateful that I choose to surround myself with people like you! In gratitude, I wish you all a Happy Thanksgiving.
