Kristina Krivivic’s Donate Life story starts when she was just 18 years old. She was a senior in high school when she began to experience extreme hip pain. Afte...r numerous doctor visits and extensive testing, she finally found an orthopedic surgeon who was able to address the problem. Kristina was told that her hips have a degree of retroversion to them. My bones would pop & click, and feel as if they were caught on something, Kristina says. She was diagnosed with femoral-acetabular impingement (FAI) with a torn labrum in both legs. In April of 2015 (left leg) and June 2015 (right leg), Kristina underwent a bone shave, labrum repair and anchor placement. She was grateful to fully recover from the bilateral hip surgery. To the ordinary eye no one would have known I spent months on crutches, in rib/hip braces and went through extensive physical therapy, she says. After 5 years, she began to experience a similar yet new pain in both legs. Again, after countless tests, it was determined that the sewn labrum had worn thin and was torn. The ball part of the hip that had been shaved into almost a crescent shape had grown back. Kristina was presented with two options: A femoral acetabular reconstruction with rods, plates and screws, or a labrum reconstruction with cadaver tissue graft repair and bone shaving. In January and March of 2020, at the age of 22, Kristina underwent another bilateral surgery; her recovery again required braces, crutches and physical therapy. To date, I’ve had 4 hip surgeries and I have 6 scars on each leg. However, that means nothing to me, knowing two angels gave me the gift of life. Being able to walk freely and on my own is a true gift. Between surgeries, Kristina earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing. As a registered nurse and as someone with family members that have been both donors and recipients, Kristina says she has always been an advocate for organ and tissue donation. Now that she has experienced all sides of Donate Life, she is proud to be a tissue recipient. Today, Kristina is celebrating the 6 month transplant-aversary from her last surgery! Tissue donors are LIFE donors. I can’t ever thank the donors and their families enough for the true GIFT they have given me. I will carry these two people with me wherever I go and I am honored to have them walk with me in spirit for the rest of my life. One tissue donor can help and heal as many as 75 people.
