Congratulations to everyone who trained, tested, and advanced in rank today! Martial Arts training is extremely challenging, which is why it has tremendous value. If we remove the challenges, eliminate the obstacles, and create an environment free of difficulty and disappointment, training would be worthless and we would become helpless. ... No thanks. If we flatten Mount Everest, in a feeble attempt to make it possible for everyone to reach the summit, the benefits that come from human triumph would be lost. Everyone has their own unique obstacles to overcome. Some struggles can be resolved through perseverance, strategic effort, and a non-quitting spirit. Many of our greatest difficulties and afflictions will last a lifetime. Warriors do not perceive conditions and circumstances as a function of good or bad luck. Luck is for Leprechauns. A Warrior is someone who puts forth sincere, strategic, and sustained effort in transforming bad situations into good ones, good situations into great ones, and great situations into outstanding ones. It is never too early to cultivate a non-quitting spirit, which is why we encourage our children to dare greatly, face their fears, and embrace adversity. The key to it all is embarrassingly simple, yet extraordinarily difficult. Get yourself to the point where you really want to quit, and just keep going. Some people consider this masochism. It’s not. It’s called mastery. We are looking forward to a follow up test and promotion in mid-July! Osu! -Kyoshi
