Today is National Clean Off Your Desk Day! I am just going to drop these photos here. The first is Sarah’s desk right before we moved to our space on 36th street. And there is a throwback photo of the infamous Studio Rolodexes, back in the day. Dulce is getting in on the action at Michal’s house and I am sure helping someone with their daily work! Sarah’s desk is in tidy order right now (no photographic evidence) tucked into a little office nook in our 36th street Studio. It is a backstage view of all the paperwork and office-y stuff that goes into costume making. It ain’t all thread and pins y’all! #costumebuilding #costumeshop #costume #costumedesign #costumemaker #handmade #artisan #custommadecostumes #custommade #madeinNYC #garmentdistrictNYC #theaterarts #theaterdesign #broadway #costumeindustry

It is Throwback Thursday and look what I found in our Timberlake Archives! Sarah was thrilled to make this dress for her Idol Susan Lucci for a Diet Dr. Pepper Commercial shoot in the 1980’s. The dress was a sequin/ eyelash lame copy of a Caroline Roehm style evening gown. I love this dress and I love Susan Lucci’s style of hair and make-up. Makes me long for my 1980’s Jersey Hair and huge earrings. Such a perfect example of glam. #costumebuilding #costumeshop #costume #costumedesign #costumemaker #handmade #artisan #custommadecostumes #custommade #madeinNYC #garmentdistrictNYC #theaterarts #theaterdesign #broadway #costumeindustry #drpepper #susanlucci #allmychildren #1980sfashion #fashionista

Today Jan. 2nd is officially Happy New Year to Cats Day! Happy New Year Dulce! Dulce is seen here repairing her flashy New year’s party dress from the revels she just had. As you can see the correct costume cat methodology is to sit and keep the sequins warm as you repair a loose thread. Especially important to keep the sequins warm and comfy as it makes the sequins happy, never mind the cat. #shopcats #catsofinstagram #shopcatlife #catslife #rescuecats #costumebuilding #costumeshop #costume #costumedesign #costumemaker #handmade #artisan #custommadecostumes #custommade #madeinNYC #garmentdistrictNYC #theaterarts #theaterdesign #broadway #costumeindustry

January 6th is known as National Technology Day. What is better than the discussion of technology within costuming? Now-a-days technology is second nature in many Broadway costumes such as costumes that Light up and lighting cues triggered by sensors on costumes. One technology that has been around for a while is the mic-pack. This is a small pocket that holds a battery and relay to the microphones used by the actors to project their voices in large spaces. Even smaller th...eatres use mics these days, so if you look at any costume/wardrobe area you are sure to find a little stash of these. They are simply a little pocket or bag closed with a velcro flap strapped hidden somewhere in the costume where it can travel with the actor wirelessly. Usually, the battery packs are ensconced in a waterproof condom prior to placing into these little bags- this helps prevent the actor’s sweat from disrupting or shorting out the connection. You can pre-purchase mic packs sometimes (either in flesh tones or black) but many times it falls to wardrobe or costume makers to build them to match with the costume for better camouflage. #costumebuilding #costumeshop #costume #costumedesign #costumemaker #handmade #artisan #custommadecostumes #custommade #madeinNYC #garmentdistrictNYC #theaterarts #theaterdesign #broadway #costumeindustry #theaterwardrobe #stagewardrobe #behindthescenes #sewing See more

Twelfth Night is traditionally the celebration of the Three Wise Men’s arrival with gifts at the manger during the twelve days of Christmas ending in Epiphany. Here is a lovely sketch of Mother Mary perhaps greeting the Wise Men that night and Sarah is modeling the stages of the built costume for Castleton Opera many moons ago. I love the theatrical-ness of the fabric, the sheen and drapey quality great for stage. Mary probably would not have been in satins in the manger, but this costume is lovely to look at and very operettic! I bet it just glowed under stage lighting. #costumebuilding #costumeshop #costume #costumedesign #costumemaker #handmade #artisan #custommadecostumes #custommade #madeinNYC #garmentdistrictNYC #theaterarts #theaterdesign #broadway #costumeindustry #holiday #twelfthnight

Today is National Weigh in Day. Ugh I do not want to look at my scale after all the sweets I devoured over the holidays. Luckily when costuming you can create removable fat on a fat suit! (I wish that is how it worked in real life!) Here we see Rosa working on the Caveman fat suit for the Addams Family tour and Sarah is building Sophie’s fat suit from Season Two of Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. Fat suits are such intricate builds. To get a life-like structure you must study anatomy ...and observe fat accumulations on a real body in various areas and over muscle sections. We carve various densities of foam (depending on squish-ability factor and the action the suit will see), hand stitch the foam onto a stretch structure like a leotard or unitard, then cover with a smooth (usually with flesh colored) milliskin or lycra layer. This creates padded areas of the body like tummy, hips, buttocks, arm and leg fat and chest and back fat. You want the padding to be articulated enough for normal looking movement. Many times, the fat padding is built on a stretch power net structure so that the actor’s body heat and sweat can wick away because the foam doesn’t breathe. #costumebuilding #costumeshop #costume #costumedesign #costumemaker #handmade #artisan #custommadecostumes #custommade #madeinNYC #garmentdistrictNYC #theaterarts #theaterdesign #broadway #costumeindustry #theaterwardrobe #stagewardrobe #behindthescenes #sewing See more
