Earlier this year, the TEI Sustainability Department conducted an analysis of airline miles traveled by all TEI employees. In 2019, TEI traveled a total of 1,419,579 miles via airplane. We then converted the miles into carbon emissions, and calculated that we emitted approximately 209 tons of carbon into the environment. We had an opportunity to find value in our harmful emissions by purchasing carbon offsets. Carbon offsets compensate for our emissions by cancelling out gre...enhouse gas emissions somewhere else in the world. Carbon Offset Project - 2020 has been hit with an assortment of devastating events, a primary one being the wildfires across the country. Consequently, we were inspired to choose a project that focuses on forestry. We chose to offset our carbon with the Doe Mountain Forestry Project. Carbon Offset Project Description - The Doe Mountain Forestry Offset Project is located on more than 8,500 acres of mixed hardwoods in northeast Tennessee. By committing to maintain forest CO2 stocks above the regional common practice, the project will provide significant climate benefits through carbon sequestration. It aims to protect wildlife habitat, promote biodiversity, and sequester atmospheric carbon to mitigate climate change, all while fostering important investments in the local economy. Each offset purchased is the equivalent of the carbon sequestered by around one acre of US forests every year.
