The gypsy moth has an appetite! This invasive species loves to eat oak leaves, but will happily munch on most tree leaves. You can actually see gypsy moths ever...y year if you look closely, but really high numbers show up every now and then. Thankfully, our trees are mighty and will be OK this year, even after losing their leaves. State Parks is keeping an eye on this through the fall to see if we need to try and control gypsy moth caterpillar numbers next year! Birding in winter? Yes! The winter months are prime time to spot a Bald Eagle. Since their diet is mainly fish these raptors will congregate along unfrozen sect...ions of reservoirs, lakes, and rivers. To help conserve energy, these raptors perch for long periods of time and survey the landscape for their next meal-- including a free one they might steal from another eagle, or an osprey, or even otter. : @mikelemery, Peebles Island State Park Eagle watching etiquette: Keep your distance, only use binoculars or a spotting scope to ‘get closer.’ Refrain from loud noises. Don’t try to make the birds fly under any circumstances. Observe, don’t disturb. Thank you! #wildlifewednesday See more
