Toboggan Hill Farm 02.07.2021

Toboggan Hill Farm now has a new supply of grass-fed lamb -- ground lamb, leg of lamb, racks, stew meat, shanks, shoulder steak, and organ meats. We also have pork, eggs, wild leeks, and asparagus. We will be selling at the Fredonia Winter Market this Saturday and next (10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Masonic Lodge, 321 Main St., Fredonia). Purchases may also be made at our farm. Call 716-326-2060 to arrange a time. We also have maple syrup gallons, half gallons, quarts, pints, and ...half pints, as well as 100 ml and 50 ml glass maple-leaf bottles. To arrange a purchase at our farm, call 716-326-2060. Our CSA will begin soon, June 29 for Chautauqua Institution, last week of May for other pickup locations. We have tomato plants and several dozen varieties of lettuce and greens in the greenhouse, and we have pepper plants under grow lights in our house. Everything is looking good. To get in on this bounty each week, send the appropriate amount to Toboggan Hill Farm. 8380 Hardscrabble Road, Westfield, NY 14787, along with your name, address, phone number, and email address. For prices and other details about our CSA, lamb, maple syrup, or any other products from our farm, go to tobogganhillfarm.com.

We will not be at the Fredonia Winter Market tomorrow (March 6) or next week (March 13.) Between taking care of 90 new lambs and getting ready for sugaring season, we had to let something go. Reminder: The 3% discount for joining our CSA ends March 9. Check our website at tobogganhillfarm.com for details. Thanks.

Recently, I asked for responses to the question: What is your favorite vegetable? What do you most look forward to seeing in your CSA package or on a farmers' market stand? While this was hardly a scientific study, I learned something from the 11 people who responded. Peas, salad greens, cherry tomatoes, and fresh fruit (including raspberries, blueberries, and strawberries) got three mentions, while melons, peppers, beans, carrots, and radishes were mentioned twice, and pota...toes, eggplant, onions, sweet potatoes, rhubarb, grapes, cucumbers, asparagus, and beets got one mention. Here are a few of the comments we got: We loved your little yellow cherry tomatoes, green beans, and snap peas (among many other goodies) last summer. We missed baby salad greens. We especially love arugula, baby beet greens, and tatsoi. Don’t know how well those grow in CHQ County! And my most favorite green veggie is asparagus. We usually include arugula, tatsoi, and chard (a close relative of beets) among the greens we put in our salad mix. They grow very well here. Your salad mix and lettuce last year was particularly good. I missed it when it was gone. Also ... love squash of any kind. We're planning on several kinds of summer and winter squash and we got our order in early for the very popular Salanova lettuce. We especially enjoyed the rhubarb, the varieties of tomatoes, any fruit, zucchini and squashes. My husband and grandkids were delighted with the grape pie from your Concord grapes. The only thing missing was apples. We always have plenty of grapes. Some people eat them seeds and all, some trade the grapes for eggs or something else we have, and some ask for extra grapes to make juice, jam, or pie. We have a few apple trees, but haven't had a good enough crop the last few years to offer them in our CSA. We just had enough to make a little applesauce for ourselves. If we have a better crop this year, we might offer apples as a substitution or add-on. I couldn't begin to say which veggies I'm most looking forward to. We loved everything this summer! (Well, I'm not a radish fan, but my parents did love them!) We'll be growing several kinds of radishes, including French Breakfast radish. Unlike some of our customers, I don't enjoy eating a whole radish, but I do like a little sliced up in a salad. If we offer radishes in our CSA package and you don't like radishes, even in salad, and you don't have parents who like them, we offer a substitution list with usually over a dozen choices. To join our CSA, check our website at tobogganhillfarm.com for details and send a check to Toboggan Hill Farm, 8380 Hardscrabble Road, Westfield, NY 14787. We offer a 3% discount until March 9. Even if a CSA isn't for you, you can still buy pork products, lamb, eggs, and potatoes from us at the Fredonia Winter Market. It's located at the Masonic Lodge, 321 E. Main, Fredonia, and it goes from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturdays.

Happy Belated Groundhog Day! I know, it's still winter and it certainly feels like winter, but before you know it, spring will be upon us. Here at Toboggan Hill Farm, we've ordered our seeds and we're planning our garden. Which brings us to our question: What do you most look forward to seeing on a farmers' market stand or in a CSA package? Your answers might help us plan our garden. We're still taking members for our CSA and we're offering a 3% discount for payment postmark...ed or received by March 9. Check out the attached information for details. More information is available at our website at www.tobogganhillfarm.com. In addition to our delivery sites in Chautauqua, Westfield, Fredonia, and Erie, we're offering two sites in Jamestown: St. Luke's Episcopal Church and the Audubon Community Nature Center. Last time we posted on Facebook, we listed three reasons for joining (1. our salad mix, 2. substitution options, 3. We don't use synthetic pesticides or fertilizers). Here are three more reasons: 1. We grow a wide variety of tomatoes, including artisan tomatoes, heirloom tomatoes, and cherry tomatoes. 2. We offer over a dozen varieties of potatoes, including fingerlings. 3. We offer delivery within the Chautauqua Institution grounds. In the meantime, we have pork, lamb, eggs, and a dozen varieties of potatoes. We also have golden and amber maple syrup in 50 ml glass maple leaf bottles. Our sheep are grass-fed and our other animals are fed organic grain. Check out our website at www.tobogganhillfarm.com for more information on how we raise our animals and to find out which products we have currently. We bring these products to the Fredonia Winter Market every Saturday, weather permitting. The Fredonia Winter Market is located at the Masonic Temple at 321 E. Main (Route 20), Fredonia. The market runs from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. We also sell from our farm and deliveries can usually be arranged. If you're interested in any of our products now and don't want to navigate our challenging driveway, we can meet you at the road (8380 Hardscrabble, Westfield). Give us a call at 716-326-2060.

We are now taking orders for whole or half hogs. Our Berkshire hogs are raised on organic feed supplemented with vegetables from our garden. Berkshire hogs are prized for their excellent flavor. We have five hogs scheduled to be processed on January 3. Due to difficulty in arranging a slaughter date, we're taking the hogs in later than we would have liked. They will weigh approximately 400 pounds, yielding approximately 200 pounds of meat (100 pounds for a half hog). If you'r...e interested but can't use that much meat, consider going in with friends or family. For more information, email us at [email protected]. We are still selling at the Fredonia Winter Market every Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. It's located at the Masonic Lodge, 321 E. Main St., Fredonia. We'll have lots of different kinds of potatoes as well as pork, lamb, and eggs. You can check our website at tobogganhillfarm.com to see what products we have. If you wish to avoid contact with others, you can call in an order in advance and I can bring it out to your car. We also sell from our farm, and deliveries can usually be arranged. In addition to pork, lamb, eggs, and potatoes, we also have 50 ml maple syrup in beautiful glass maple leaf bottles suitable for gifts ($3 for amber, $2.50 for very dark). If interested, email us at [email protected] or call (716)326-2060.
