Tompkins Cortland Community College 04.07.2021

A long time in the making, the Cortland community is holding its first Juneteenth celebration this Saturday - and we are proud to be a part. The free event will feature music, food, and giveaways, but also have a strong educational component with speeches by several community leaders, including our own President Orinthia Montague, Senior Diversity Officer Seth Thompson, and Trustee Bruce Tytler. The event is presented by C4 - Cortland County Community of Color - a partnership between Tompkins Cortland Community College and SUNY Cortland.

Through our 50+ years, the College has produced thousands of amazing alumni. Each year at commencement we recognize a select few with the Distinguished Alumni Award. This year we are proud to honor Marci Calabretta Canico-Bello (2009), Crystal Lyon (2005), and Jason Sidle (1994). Room 101's Peer Career Coaches DeAundrey and Essence will be taking turns writing a weekly #TransferandCareerTuesday series of advice posts and pointers. This week DeAundrey brings us: Top Resume Tips to Land you the Interview! It is important to include the most relevant information and put the most important information at the top of your resume - Try to include experience, achievements, education and skills most relevant to the job you are applying for. You can find the... most relevant skills by reading the job posting. You should prioritize important experience at the top of your resume to draw attention to key skills and experience. Action Verbs are your best friend!- It is important that you are creating impactful bullets. Use Active/strong language to start off each bullet point. Use words like collaborated instead of assisted of helped. Use a professional font- Many times employers only have a short time to review your resume so your font should be as clear and as easy to read as possible. Last, it is important to proofread! Before applying to a position and submitting your resume it is important to review your resume and check for all grammar errors.

Even if it's just turf, it sure does the heart good to see some green in the middle of a CNY winter. As the Tompkins Cortland Community College Panthers remind us, just 21 sleeps till the start spring sports.

Meet Julia Gutierrez, Tompkins Cortland Student Government Association president for 2021! Julia, whose father also attended the College, is a proud legacy student, Chemical Dependency Counseling major, and self-identified "people person." With active involvements in the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society, The National Society of Leadership and Success, and the SGA, we couldn't think of a better representative for our engaged and active student body. Crediting professor Chris "X" ...Xaver, and Assistant Director of Student Activities, Chyenne Gorton as major sources of encouragement and motivation, Julia is hopes to start her own practice, keep up with her blogging on mental health and wellness, and becoming a Certified Recovery Coach upon graduation. Her two cents to prospective students considering Tompkins Cortland? "You can do absolutely anything you set your mind to, as long as you believe in yourself. TC3 has given me many chances, academically and as a person. Everyone here is accepting and understanding. The professors have been so kind to me in this past year and if you ever need help with ANYTHING, they are always there to lend a hand. If you are considering attending our school, I push you to do so! You will be welcomed with open arms. You aren’t just a number here; you will be recognized as your own, individual self!"

Dan Brown, Director of the Franziska Racker Centers , a close College partner, reminds us of 10 important reasons to get the COVID-19 vaccine. Number one being to safeguard at risk populations and our loved ones. A community of direct support professionals, caregiving is something on which the Racker Center is an authority. We appreciate their advocacy and are proud to help in the train and credential of their staff.
