Hollywood legend Marlene Dietrich, born on this day in 1901, was a beloved star of stage and screen, but did you know she was also a violinist? It's true! In fa...ct, her dream as a young woman was to be a concert violinist. An untimely wrist injury limited Dietrich's dexterity and put her dream to an early end. Never one to give up too easily, she found work in 1922 as a violinist in a pit orchestra at a Berlin cinema, but apparently she wasn't quite up to snuff: she was fired after only four weeks! This provided an early impetus for Dietrich to instead focus on drama. She continued to play violin casually well into her acting and singing career (it was occasionally worked into her roles, and she's seen in the third photo here entertaining French actor Jean Gabin at a party), but it would never become a notable part of her professional life.
