Memorial Day (May 30) is an American holiday, observed on the last Monday of May, honoring the men and women who died while serving in the U.S. military. Memorial Day 2021 will occur on Monday, May 31. Originally known as Decoration Day, it originated in the years following the Civil War and became an official federal holiday in 1971. Many Americans observe Memorial Day by visiting cemeteries or memorials, holding family gatherings and participating in parades. Please take some time to remember those who served in the US military that gave all so that we can continue to enjoy the freedoms of our country.

We are saddened to hear of the sudden passing of retired Detective Lieutenant James Carney , who retired in 2003. Jim became a police officer in 1980 after serving the Town of Tonawanda for six years as a member of the Paramedic unit. He was one of the original 12 paramedics who received their training in 1974. That is believed to have been one of the original paramedic classes in New York State. Jim also was one of the original (or plank holders) members of the Town of Tonawanda police ERT team. May he rest in peace.
