Why do we Insist on Feeding Kids Junk? This past weekend my wife Nellie and I were in Lake Placid with our 2 year old. We stopped for lunch at a brand new rest...aurant in a recently renovated grand hotel. The place was beautiful and the menu was great. Full of healthy choices like grass fed beef, kale salads, and wild caught fish. The waiter brought over a coloring book, crayons, and .... a kids menu. The kids menu had Mac n cheese, chicken tenders, grilled cheese, and hot dogs. I turned to the waiter and said why would I ever want to feed any of this stuff to my toddler? He just looked blankly at me and so I changed the subject, but my wife and I continued the conversation. It’s one that we’ve had over and over. Why in our modern culture do we keep feeding our kids junk? It crosses all economic levels from Happy Meals at McDonalds to kid’s menus at high end restaurants. Today I received an email from Chris Kresser that told of a similar experience he had and asked the identical question. I had to share it. Here’s some of what he had to say: The other day we took our six-year-old daughter, Sylvie, to a musical theater performance at the Bay Area Children’s Theater. At the intermission, I was dismayed (but not surprised) to see that they were selling ice cream, cookies, fruit juice, pretzels, and other processed, refined, and sugary snacks. Why do we insist on feeding our kids junk? Why do we even have the concept of kids food at all? In traditional cultures, kids simply eat what adults eat. There are no kids breakfast cereals (or cereals at all), Happy Meals, Lunchables, juice boxes, or kids menus. If you’re a parent in the modern world, you’re fighting an uphill battle if you want your children to eat well. As soon as you step outside your house, you encounter a culture that seems to think that kids have an inalienable right to eat sugar, treats, and processed foodsnot just on special occasions, but every day of the week. Kids don’t come into the world with this expectation. We create it for them. And once they get a taste of sugar, refined flour, and other processed food, is it any wonder that they like it? Those foods trigger all of the reward mechanisms in our brains, and kidseven more so than adultshave a hard time resisting those biologically hardwired impulses. It doesn’t have to be this way. Here’s one simple step you can take: abolish the idea of kids food from your vocabulary, and from your home. When you sit down to eat meals as a family, there is only one optionfor both the adults and the kids. This won’t be an easy transition if your kids are used to something different, but it’s worth the effort. It’s time to take our kids’ health back from Big Food and their profit-driven attempt to sell us more kids food products. Let’s do it together! Warmly, Chris & Wil
