Seen a familiar face at Touro Dental Health? Dr. Alex Dorrough, Class of 2020, has returned to Touro College of Dental Medicine at New York Medical College where he will be the first fellow training to treat patients with intellectual and developmental disabilities in a new program which aims to begin bridging the gap between specialized dentists, who can effectively treat adult patients with intellectual and developmental disabilities, with general dentists. The program was made possible by generous support from the Mother Cabrini Health Foundation.

Earlier this month Touro College of Dental Medicine at New York Medical College students celebrated #HispanicHeritageMonth month with a celebration, and presentation of ways to help our future providers give the best care they can to our patients who's first language is not English. This year's Hispanic Heritage Month focus centered around ways to help our elderly patient population. Here are some helpful tips from your friendly providers at Touro Dental Health!

Today, let's learn more about Dr. Jerry Halpern Dr. Halpern is a board certified oral and maxillofacial surgeon, and also serves on the faculty of New York Presbyterian-Weill Cornell Medical Center, where he teaches clinical oral and maxillofacial surgery. Over the course of his career, Dr. Halpern has received numerous awards and has published and presented on topics ranging from oral cancer reconstruction to dental forensic ident...ification. For almost a decade, he has dedicated his time to helping the children of Fundación MIR in La Romana, Dominican Republic. You may also be surprised to know that Dr. Halpern holds another important title - President, New York Academy of Dentistry. "I am honored to be president this centennial year . As with our past presidents, my role is to be true to the tenets of the academy, Media and communication allows organizations to grow and thrive. Clinical Assistant Professor of Dental Medicine Dr. Randolph joins us with over 45 years of experience practicing general dentistry with subspecialties in pediatrics, TMJ, functional orthodontics, and cosmetic dentistry. For the past 13 years, he has served as head of one of the largest mobile dental companies in the country, providing care to underprivileged and underserved patients in NY.

We'd like you to meet Marianne O'Shea, D.M.D. Specializing in general dentistry, Dr. O'Shea became interested in the field when she was just 15 years old. After shadowing her family dentist for just a few weeks, she was promoted, asked to don a pair of scrubs and assist, and the rest is history! In making the choice to become an educator herself, Dr. O’Shea made the active decision to approach teaching in an open and caring way, If someone had encouraged me a little bit... more, I think it would have made the experience better. For me, I want our students to feel comfortable and not be afraid to ask questions. In her free time, Dr. O’Shea enjoys cooking, knitting, hiking. She also has a great love for travel, so much so that she and her husbandTCDM’s very own Dr. Stoffel!have visited almost every continent and went on a cross country road trip together between dental school and their residency. Together, they also enjoy spending time with their 8-month-old son.

Last month's virtual Give Kids a Smile! virtual events were a huge success - providing complimentary care to more than 40 local children throughout the month of February, as well as hosting live, oral health education sessions for children, and contests aimed at promoting health oral habits. Congratulations to Zaydan, 10, from Washington Irving Intermediate School for his paper, Healthy Smile, Healthy Life," which won first prize!
