Town of Chester Police Department NY 19.11.2020

Shortly after 7:30 this morning, one of our patrol cars was involved in a crash on Kings Highway near Knapps View Park with another vehicle. Both the officer and the other driver suffered only minor injuries. The officer was taken to Garnet Health Medical Center in another patrol car and the other driver was transported from the scene by a family member and will be seeking medical evaluation later today. The crash is being investigated by the State Police. Preliminary investi...gation has revealed that the other driver fell asleep on his way home from working an overnight shift and sideswiped the oncoming patrol car before crashing into a utility pole. Orange and Rockland Utilities will be working in the area to replace the pole today. Thank you to all of the agencies who assisted at the scene and to everyone who has reached out to check on our officer. See more

The governor's executive order allowing grace periods on driver licenses, registrations and inspections that expired after March is set to end tomorrow, November 3rd. DMV offices are offering services by appointment, remotely and by mail or internet. Most auto inspection stations have been open for several months. Please check your license, registrations and vehicle inspections and take any necessary steps to bring them up to date now.

It's November 1st. We hope you remembered to set your clocks back last night. But we're really here to remind you that the new seatbelt law goes into effect today. Effective today, everyone in a vehicle must wear a seatbelt or be in an approved child restraint. Previously, backseat passengers over the age of 16 did not have to be buckled up. That is no longer the case. The exemption for backseat passengers in taxis and for-hire vehicles (Ubers, Lyfts, livery cabs, etc.) has also been removed. Fines start at $50. So if you're driving or riding in a vehicle in New York State - BUCKLE UP!
