A letter from Supervisor Siller: This week we lost two extremely dedicated members of Town government through resignation. Councilman Mike Bebon tended his resignation this morning, effective immediately. Mike brought a completely different perspective to the Town Board. His depth of knowledge, sincerity, professionalism and commitment to Town issues was unparalleled in my years of experience in Town government. Mike was a tremendous asset to the Town and he will be sorely... missed. Edward Hindin also tendered his resignation, effective immediately. Edward brought his expertise to the Planning Board as well as the Comprehensive Plan, serving in both positions as a volunteer. It was singularly through Edward’s efforts that the Comprehensive Plan Task Force was established and the entire process started. It will be very difficult for the process to continue as smoothly as it has been to date. I will not get into the reasons for their resignations. The Town Board will continue to move forward. Our two main priorities, housing and water, are still in the forefront. In the coming weeks we will be presenting proposals to address both issues. There seems to have been some confusion, but it should be noted that the Task Force, and not the Comprehensive Plan Advisory Committee (CPAC) is tasked with managing the process on behalf of the Town Board. The role of the CPAC is purely advisory to the Task Force. The CPAC was created to assist the Task Force and is one of many ways in which citizen input is sought. There have also been or will be surveys, focus groups (workshops), consultations with town committees and departments and conversations with community organizations and local businesses. With the resignations of Mike Bebon and Edward Hindin from the Comprehensive Plan Task Force, the Town Board has decided to suspend further work on the Comprehensive Plan until such time as the Task Force can be reconstituted or reconfigured. The Town Board recognizes the work and momentum that has been achieved thus far and anticipates restarting as soon as possible.

It describes Shelter Island 2030 as a family-friendly and aging-friendly community, with a balanced year-round and seasonal economy, a regional leader in environmental stewardship, with safe access to important features of the Island, and a responsive, transparent, and accountable Town Government. The Values and Principles Statements amplify the importance of preserving the Islands character and environment, the inclusiveness of the Shelter Island community, stewardships of our environment, support of local business and accountable and effective government and community services, and data driven cost effective decision making. It also emphasizes sustainability and resilience, economic viability, community diversity and a partnership between government, residents and community institutions, and other communities to achieve the Vision for Shelter Island 2030. On reviewing and recommending approval of the Draft Vision statement, one member of the CPAC noted that the Vision Statement described the "community she want to live in, according to Project Director Edward Hindin. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE December 2, 2020 In response to increased rates of COVID-19 transmission in the United States and other countries, and to protect New York State’s (NYS) successful containment of COVID-19, NYS has issued a travel advisory for anyone entering NYS from a non-bordering state or traveled internationally from a country designated under a CDC level 2 (moderate risk) or 3 (high-risk) COVID-19 travel health notice.... All travelers coming to NYS from areas beyond the border states (NJ, CT, PA, MA, VT) must fill out the NYS Traveler Health Form. Travelers must quarantine for 14 days from the last day in a non-border state or another country, unless the traveler meets certain criteria to test out of the mandatory 14-day quarantine: For travelers who were out-of-state for more than 24 hours: Travelers must obtain a test within three days of departure, prior to arrival in New York. The traveler must, upon arrival in New York, quarantine for three days. On day 4 of their quarantine, the traveler must obtain another COVID test. If both tests come back negative, the traveler may exit quarantine early upon receipt of the second negative diagnostic test. For travelers who were out-of-state for less than 24 hours: The traveler does not need a test prior to their departure from the other state and does not need to quarantine upon arrival in New York State. However, the traveler must fill out the NYS Traveler Medical Form upon entry into New York State, and take a COVID diagnostic test 4 days after their arrival in New York. Essential workers will continue to be exempt. For general inquires call the Hotline at: 1-888-364-3065.
