From the desk of Supervisor Matt Slater: Today's report from the Department of Health shows 35 active cases in the Town of Yorktown. While our active count is lower than Friday there were still 7 new cases since Friday. Last week Dr. Sherlita Amler, the Westchester County Commissioner of Health, explained this means there are 35 contagious individuals in our community. As a reminder, the confirmed cases on the map that is released is not real time. We estimate these statis...tics to be upwards of 72 hours behind. This delay is caused by the data sharing process in place from the testing labs, to the state and then to the county which performs a more detailed review of the information. In Westchester County there are 1201 active cases. We continue to see a steady increase in our region. County Executive Latimer explained earlier today that our regional infection rate still remains relatively low (under 2%) compared to where we once were. However, that does not mean we can afford to relax our vigilance on preventative measures. Most recent hospitalization statistics, which are from Saturday, show 54 people in Westchester County currenlty hospitalized due to COVID. This is slightly less than last week but on October 5th we had 27 people hospitalized. County health officials are keeping an eye on any potential trend using these numbers. The best way to keep these numbers down is to wear a mask, wash your hands and make socially responsible decisions.
Thanks to our ability to manage this unprecedented time, we are proposing a budget that cuts property taxes by 0.5%.

The Yorktown Police Department is collaborating with Hope’s Door to enhance domestic violence interventions. Yorktown joins five other northern Westchester County police departments that are working with Hope’s Door, a nonprofit organization that empowers domestic violence victims to achieve safety, independence and healing from the trauma of abuse. Domestic violence calls for assistance are among the most dangerous calls for service that police respond to on a daily basis,... said Chief Robert Noble. Domestic violence is even more dangerous for the family members of a household, or, intimate dating partners of assailants, whose day to day lives are negatively impacted. The Yorktown Police Department’s partnership with Hope’s Door allows us to better protect and better provide services to victims of domestic violence. It sends a message to assailants that their violent behavior will not be overlooked. This partnership has already made a positive difference in the lives of multiple victims of domestic violence in the past few months and I am confident that it will continue to do so for years to come.
