Make sure you write in the date you would like us to haul out your boat. Traditionally, when boaters think about time on the water, our mind immediately goes to hot, sunny days in the middle of the Summer. However, Fall boating is just as enjoyable and relaxing once the leaves begin to fall and temperatures begin to cool off. Some reasons to get out on the water this Fall while the weather permits are . The water is much quieter and less busy. It is so nice to be able to spend this time alone on the water and reflect on the memories made in ...certain spots during the summertime. Another great reason to hit the water during the Fall time is simply because of the cool, crisp air just pack a few blankets, sweatshirts, and pairs of pants. During the months of September and October, the leaves are falling and getting on the water is truly breathtaking. While seeing the leaves fall and change color, it is also great to watch migrating birds fly across the water. It can also be fun to bring out a bird guidebook and try to pick out certain ones you may see flying past that are not prevalent during the hot months. Take this scenery mixed with the empty and open waters, and it is an extremely relaxing experience. See more

There is a new invasive species invading the Great Lakes and the Finger Lakes the Spiny water flea. The spiny water flea is native to Europe and Asia. The species was unintentionally introduced into the United States’ Great Lakes through the discharge of contaminated cargo ship ballast water. They were first discovered in Lake Ontario in 2005 it is suspected that spiny water fleas finally got into Oneida Lake from the east through the Erie Canal and that they will contin...ue to spread throughout the Finger Lakes. While it is no danger to humans or domestic animals, spiny water fleas can have a huge impact on aquatic life in lakes and ponds due to their rapid reproduction rates. It is one of the more disruptive invasive species, said Lars Rudstam, director of Cornell’s field station. He added it ranks among the top four with the most negative impact in the Great Lakes system along with zebra mussels, quagga mussels and fish-hook water fleas. Spiny water fleas are an aquatic zooplankton (small animals) from Europe and Asia that have invaded the Great Lakes ecosystem. Adults range from to inch long and they have a single long tail with 1-3 sets of small spines along its length. In New York, they are found in more than 10 counties. Lake Ontario, Lake Erie, Lake George, Sacandaga Reservoir, Saratoga Lake and a number of smaller water bodies are infested. Infestations of spiny water fleas negatively impact native fish populations, aquatic habitats, and sports fishing. They are known as a food web disruptor in the Great Lakes because of their ability to decrease the abundance of other zooplankton, particularly daphnia. Daphnia are an important food source for fish such as alewive, and the young of other species, including perch and walleye. Right now, there is no successful method of control.
