"In 2004, I had an audition for a new play that was being produced off-Broadway called Almost, Maine. It was by John Cariani whom I didn’t know but had seen in Fiddler on the Roof on Broadway that season. His performance in Fiddler (he played Motel the Tailor) was beautiful and hilarious and heartbreaking and he reminded me of Kermit the Frogin the best way possible. I didn’t know he was a playwright, so I was excited to see what kind of writer this vivacious and heartfelt... performer was. Turned out, he was a vivacious and heartfelt writer as well. [...] I loved every one of those weird, sad, beautiful, funny souls. Four actors would get to play all the characters. I wanted this job SO BAD. I didn’t get it. (One of my dearest friends, Miriam Shor, got it instead and she was annoyingly good in it. Sothere’s that.) But an incredible thing happened [...]" Thank you Kelly for writing a story we don't often hear. (And what a fun rehearsal room!) "We help each other because we wish to ease another’s pain. We learn about this astonishing earth we live on; we share the knowledge with wonder. We make glorious music, place pigments on surfaces to create art, we move our bodies to express what it is to be human, to be alive. We write. We imagine what it is to be other people, to feel what they feel. We tell dumb jokes to make each other laugh. We tell each other stories. We hunger for these stories because that is h...ow we grow as humans, and we want to grow. We yearn for it. That is the sign of a living thing." - Eunice Wong Our WHILE WE'RE HOME this week features one of the most serendipitous moments you might have ever heard of. AND a strong call to action. Thank you Eunice for sharing this with us. Read: The Goodness in The Time of Death // by Eunice Wong http://transportgroup.org//the-goodness-in-the-time-of-de/

"This reality we are dealing with now is familiar to me: I feel like The Actress I played in the show, the one who suddenly realizes the affair is over and has been for some time, and without her consent. Desperate for what is past. Fighting to hold on to something that is justinexplicablygone. She cajoles, she manipulates, she threatens, she bargains, she denies." - Rachel Bay Jones Another personal, sexy and fascinating WHILE WE'RE HOME. "The truth is actors seldom feel like hammers. I’ve always felt more like vegetables at a Shoney’s buffet, if I’m honest. Producers want yummy icing. They want delicious fat. They want you for the love of GOD to get in your LIGHT and just SAY the goddam LINE ALREADY or they will find someone else who WILL! They certainly don’t want a healthy plate of broccoli no matter how much cheese sauce you’ve poured all over yourself. And of course, we actors happily take those emp...ty calorie jobs because ya’ know, rent. And health insurance. And the humiliating way our accountant takes off their glasses, rubs the bridge of their nose and says, I’m so sorry every year at tax time. Because everyone knows real hammers aren’t in it for the money. That’s why we get paid with a wet napkin and a bag of marshmallows while murmuring this is the way." - Donna Lynne Champlin This week our WHILE WE'RE HOME wades into the deep waters of student matinees and why actors even do what they do. Thank you Donna Lynne for this! Read Am I a Hammer, or Just a Tool? // by Donna Lynne Champlin http://transportgroup.org/pro/am-i-a-hammer-or-just-a-tool/

"It’s April 2008. My mother has just flown in from Michigan with a fresh hairdo and nice clothes and is in the audience waiting for the first preview of "Marcy in the Galaxy" to begin. It’s my semi-autobiographical musical and a lot of it is about my relationship with her. I don’t think she minds so much that it’s autobiographicalI know her concern is that OTHERS love it, so I finally receive the accolades she thinks I deserve. The lights go down..." A touching and tear j...erking WHILE WE'RE HOME by Nancy Shayne the writer, composer and lyricist for "Marcy in the Galaxy". Thank you, Nancy! *We recommend having tissues nearby*. "I almost couldn’t believe what I had just heard! Would I accept an offer to play a leading role in a musical with Jackie Hoffman in New York City? I was about to blurt out, OH MY GOD, YES, OF COURSE! ARE YOU CRAZY!? when I looked over at my pregnant wife sitting on the couch. The due date of our first child was right during the run of the show. An understudy for an off-Broadway show just wasn’t a thing. There was no way I could take the role knowing that I would have... to call out of the show when my daughter was born. I told Jack I’d think about it and call him back, but in my heart, I knew it was a No." - Jason SweetTooth Williams This week on WHILE WE'RE HOME we're revisiting one of the most joyful moments in our history with actor and dad, Jason SweetTooth Williams.
