"Being of Afro-Caribbean decent, I did not know much about triathlon as a sport. I ran track in my last year of high school and performed admirably, but endurance sports was never on my radar nor did I imagine that at some point in my future it would become such an integral part of my life. I did my first triathlon on a dare from fellow TriLatino member Jeff, who got into the sport the previous year. Without training I completed my first super sprint the day before the West...chester Olympic Tri. I placed 4th out of 12 racers being beaten very badly by a 12 year old. It was at that point I decided to train and come back the following year, where I completed the Olympic distance. Over the years I went on to complete multiple sprint and Olympic tris culminating in an Ironman 70.3 at Mont Tremblant. After that, I decided to take a break from triathlon and focus solely on running with the aim of running a marathon. I completed my first marathon in Paris in 2019 where I surpassed my goal. TriLatino has been an essential and accepting part of my endurance journey and even when I am not actively training for an event, they are considered family." - Khalid McFarlane #BHM #enduranceracing TriLatino Muevete

"My legacy is woven in the cross-section of athletics and social justice. So it is special to me to share how the impact of endurance sports and service to the community honors those who walked before me. I joined TriLatino around in 2015 with no experience in group athletics. I didn’t even know how to ride a bike. However, I really love a good challenge and I believed that this was worth the risk. This goal would unfold very differently than I ever anticipated and taught me ...about the strength in humility, leadership and hope. There is a lot sandwiched in between, but in this pandemic time I have called upon my swim, bike, run experiences to not only keep me afloat, but help me expand as a leader, athlete of color and community builder. My escapes to the pool, virtual races and relationships in the tri community have continued to bear fruit during extraordinary times. Truly, they have saved me. Now several years with the club and serving on the board, there is even more. This brings me to my father. I have reflected a lot on this man who shaped me and my ideas on legacy, empowerment and change. He taught me that the justice we seek is truly in our hands. With his brothers, he desegregated his local high school through sports. The only blacks at the school, they were the football, baseball and track stars. That designation came with a lot of pain and heartache, but he went on to become one of the first blacks recruited to Notre Dame football. But poverty closed that door shut for him. He went on to play baseball as a walk on pitcher for the Orioles only to have that dream shattered with an early injury. An entrepreneur, he led off the field and encouraged black athletes to build your own. He founded the Black Athletes Foundation for Sickle Cell Anemia and sat in a circle of greats like Hank Aaron, Roberto Clemente, Muhammad Ali and more. Together, they brought to the forefront awareness of Sickle Cell and changed the landscape for treatment. My father rarely talked about this work and I would learn of much of this after death through stories shared. However, he always instilled in his girls that nothing is out of reach and everything good should be shared with the community. So if one more athlete gets access to a pool, competes in their first tri or even finds refuge in our club, that is a good thing and speaks to the justice that we seek."
