Our friends at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Seaford NY, gave us a large donation of coats this past weekend. Later that night was the night of a devastating fire a couple avenues over, that ended up displacing many women in a shelter. They women were moved to a facility close to us, and since these women lost everything, we were able to provide them with these coats. The remainder were distributed in our food pantry and soup kitchen. We are so thankful the the many partnerships we have with other churches and organizations around the New York area. The spirit of community is truly still alive and well.
We are not here to discount the good work canned food drives can do. For example, preventing good that would otherwise go to waste, is a wonderful use for a canned food drive. But direct giving is a much more effective way to support food insecure communities through your local food pantry, food bank, or soup kitchen. If you want to help others right now fight food insecurity, your direct gift helps so much more than you could ever do by yourself. Consider a gift today. www.safhnyc.org/give
Research has shown time and time again, that low income households often fail to adopt healthy eating habits, not because of a lack of desire to do so, but by the simple fact that healthier diets are more expensive. Inadequate access to full grocery stores, storage, and/or cooking supplies, in addition to cost, are contributing factors to the lack of healthy eating habits *not* a lack of awareness. It's why we ensure that all our lunches and grocery bags provide a well-balanced mix of all food groups. We made a goal this year of purchasing 45% of our produce from local farms, including organic sources, and we are on track for meeting that goal.
Those who are unhoused or who have unstable housing are the most vulnerable right now, not only with winter here, but with the pandemic. You see them on the street or the subway. Perhaps there's even someone that you see on a regular basis. These are our fellow New Yorkers who not only need our help, but deserve dignity. We provide just that through healthy and thoughtful meals, coats, and connections to other services throughout the city. Help us help New York. Donate Today. Visit safhnyc.org/give
Being in food service, we were already uniquely prepared for dealing with #coronavirus because we already practiced food safety measures, including sanitation and handwashing. But we made sure to step up our game to keep people safe and avoid the spread of the virus, while still feeding the community.
