We've been constructing a new section of line this winter on the Big Tupper Rd.
Northline, It is with a heavy heart that I am addressing all of you as I return regarding members of our Northline family and industry Brothers. As you all kno...w 1249 Journeyman Lineman Jeremy Kearns lost his life Tuesday doing the job he loved when the helicopter he was aboard was involved in an event. Journeyman Lineman Ben McAllister was also onboard and by the grace of God suffered minor injuries. I am so grateful that he is going to be okay physically, however the pain and grief experienced by all involved will be far reaching and painful. Below is the initial incident summary. On October 30th a six man crew conducted their pre-job briefing at the landing zone at approximately 14:45. The crew consisted of two NLU Journeyman Linemen on the helicopter, a contracted pilot and a co-pilot on the helicopter. On the ground was one NLU general foreman, and one contracted helicopter groundman who were supporting the ground work near the structure. The task at hand was to spot/hang the blocks on the north side of the structures 2-7 through 3-6 so that the shield wire could be transferred later. At approximately 16:10, while hanging the block at structure 2-7, an event happened that caused the helicopter to become entangled in the energized transmission line and catch fire. The two journeyman linemen and the two contracted pilots jumped from the helicopter approximately fifty feet to the ground. One journeyman lineman and one pilot were fatally injured. The National Transportation Safety Board is conducting an investigation into the event that caused the helicopter to crash. I am feeling such profound sadness and helplessness yet I know that this absolutely pales in comparison to the to the horror these families are experiencing. Please know you and all involved are centered in my heart and thoughts and have been as we traveled home to you to assist in some way. I am so very heartbroken for these families, our Northline family and our 1249 family and at the same time starving for information to attempt to understand what occurred. The NTSB immediately took control of the site and all information as this is an aviation event making it challenging for us to gather critical information. Northline however is still conducting its own investigation. As painful and particularly difficult this is for those closest to the event, we all need to try to understand what occurred and what we can learn what we can do to prevent it from ever occurring again. I also ask you to join me in supporting Below are Northline’s Crisis Management assignments for your use; Incident Commander Rick Aguila Investigation lead Rudy Kuntz Public Relations Susan Danskin Family and Bereavement support Shirley Atkins I wanted you to see this statement below from Maria Palmer at Catalyst, also a member of our Northline family has asked that It be shared with Northline. Please know that there is nothing more important to me and my family than keeping all of you, all of Northline, and to the extent possible all in our industry and safe and healthy. Please embrace my message that now is the time above all times we must open our hearts and lean on each and those around us. Jamie James C. The 2018 NEPPA / MEUA Apprentice Lineworker program. Congratulations to Tyler Chiasson and Chris Zaidan of the Tupper Lake Municipal Electric on your accomplishment. Of the 21 initial students 12 remained after completing the 4 year program. I wish you all a safe and rewarding career serving your systems. -Marc
