"...the most important thing about printing is that it conveys thought, ideas, images, from one mind to other minds. This statement is what you might call the front door of the science of typography." - Beatrice Warde, 'The Crystal Goblet, or Printing Should be Invisible' This #InternationalWomensDay, we're celebrating a pioneer typographer whose love and enthusiasm for our craft lives on today. From advocated for equality in the design industry to championing higher standards in typography, our appreciation for Ms. Warde's contribution is memorialized in the Beatrice Warde Scholarship, sponsored by TDC & Monotype. In keeping with our long-standing tradition of recognizing Art Directors that uphold the values and standards of our profession, Type Directors Club celebrates Roy E. LaGrone, a TDC invited speaker from January 1969. LaGrone, who retired in 1991 as the art director of the Rutgers University Medical School was an Air Force artist who recorded flying missions on canvas. He was commissioned as a flight officer with the Tuskegee's 318th Air Base Squadron in Alabama, and was a me...mber of the 332d Fighter Group, one of four all-Black fighter and bomber squadrons that fought in the European Theater of World War II. His work has been described as a "real tribute", capturing the essence of the Tuskegee Airmen and the US Air Force. In spite of placing his life on the line while on active duty, LaGrone was painfully conscious of racial discrimination, "Here I was, a commissioned officer in the United States Army, an officer and a gentleman, as it were, and in the States I was still forced to sit in the back of the bus." TDC salutes the contribution of this National Treasure during #BlackHistoryMonth.
