Study looks at how COVID-19 invades the brain in severe cases The authors theorized that looking at mucosal immunity could shed more light on how and why some people remain asymptomatic, despite having the virus in their system. Could it be that this is due to early mucosal immune responses that succeed in containing and eliminating the infection before it becomes serious? Michael W. Russell, a professor with the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences at the University of Buffalo, said in a press release. "We will not know unless these questions are addressed."

His highly cited and well-funded research seeks to unravel the roles that saliva and microorganisms play in health, including in adhesion to the teeth and surfaces of the mouth, defense against pathogens and colonization of the oral cavity. The International Association for Dental Research recognized Dr. R...uhl with the Distinguished Scientist Award in Salivary Research in 2020 and the Salivary Researcher of the Year Award in 2014. UB Exceptional Scholars: Sustained Achievement Award honors outstanding professional achievement that has been focused on a particular body of work over a number of years. This award was created to recognize an unprecedented accomplishment in a senior scholar's career, distinguishing a body of work of enduring importance that has gone beyond the norm in a particular field of study.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday from St. Gregory the Great Church, 200 St. Gregory Court, Williamsville at 8:45 AM. Memorials may be made in Dr. Ciancio's memory to the UB School of Dental Medicine Scholarship Fund.

It is with great sadness we report the passing of Dr. Sebastian G. Ciancio. Dr. Ciancio was a faculty member in the School of Dental Medicine and Chair of the Department of Periodontics and Endodontics for over 50 years. He was a nationally and internationally recognized leader in the dental profession and in the discipline of periodontics. Over his long career, Dr. Ciancio was awarded numerous honors. He was SUNY Distinguished Professor, past president of the American Academy of Periodontics, and the first recipient of the American Association for Dental Research Presidential Citation to list but a few. We extend our sincere condolences to Dr. Ciancio’s wife Marilyn and the entire Ciancio family. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held for Dr. Ciancio this Saturday at 8:45 am at St. Gregory the Great Church in Buffalo, NY.
