Joan Linder @joan_linder brings us beneath the Peace Bridge to Bird Island Pier. We asked Joan what she would do if she could change one thing about the world. I’d like to change our collective human attitude toward each other to one that embraces love, respect and supports all of our needs for clean water, air and land. Joan Linder is known for making large-scale drawings with thousands if not hundreds of thousands of marks. She finds inspiration from her immediate ...surroundings, often in quotidian subjects. Linder has participated in over 150 exhibitions at venues that include Kunstahallen Brandts, Gwanjgu Art Museum, Bronx Museum, Queens Museum, Museum Fine Arts Boston and the Albright Knox Art Gallery. Her work has been written about in publications such as Art News, the New York Times and Hyperallergic. She has completed public commissions for the Metropolitan Transit Authority in NYC, Roswell Park Cancer Institute in Buffalo and is currently creating a new permanent commission for Public Art for Public Schools in NYC. She has received numerous grants and fellowships from organizations such as the Pollock Krasner Foundation, Yaddo and MacDowell. Her practice also includes curating and her most recent project Hot Spots: Radioactivity in the Landscape travelled from the UB Art Galleries to the Krannert Museum at University of Illinois, Urbana Champaign. Linder is a Professor of Art at the University at Buffalo, SUNY. Parrish Gibbons Herzog @parrishvictorian brings us to the Kenan Centera community outreach organization in Lockport, NY. We asked what she would do if she could change one thing to make the world a better place, and she plainly said, ensure every child is loved. Herzog is a community connector, business owner, curator, arts and disabilities advocate focused on bringing it all together. Sara Heidinger @sheidingerphoto brings us to Buffalo’s Outer Harbor. We asked Heidinger where she finds inspiration in Buffalo: I find it in everyday things. An old building, a crack of light, a shadow that strikes me, the way a street light hits something. We have so much beautiful green space so that’s always inspiring. I love the outer harbor. I feel so connected to that space and it always helps me shake out my brain. Sara’s passion for capturing life in simple thin...gs began at an early age. After studying photography at Mckinley high school, Sara continued to fine tune her craft at the University at Buffalo and for years afterward in New York City. Sara’s quest to uncover joy through photography has taken her across the globe from Buffalo to Jamaica, Australia Turks and Caicos, Turkey and most recently Costa Rica. Her journey becomes more than just creating a final product, but a celebration of experiences for herself and others that may have been unknown otherwise. Sara’s creative, yet comfortable approach allows for the capture of truly vulnerable, real and esteemed moments and objects. Her portraits of people and places convey empathy for the living, but also breathe life into the untouched. In her spare time, Heidinger co-owns Undergrounds Coffee House @ugcoffee_ofw in Buffalo’s Old First Ward neighborhood. We received artist Jason Contangelo’s lovely self-published limited edition book, Numina, in the mail yesterday! Jason describes the series of weird film images within the book as the search for the numinous sublime. The work can be read as a poetic meditation on nature and beauty, with the photographs meeting at the junction of the spiritual and psychedelic--what Jason calls the spirits of place.
