Daniel Hess, #UBuffalo professor and chair of urban planning examines the evolution of gay neighborhoods and other LGBTQI+ urban spaces in his recently published book, The Life and Afterlife of Gay Neighborhoods: Renaissance and Resurgence. Released earlier this year and co-authored by Hess and Alex Bitterman, SUNY Alfred State professor of architecture, the book focuses on the transition of gay neighborhoods away from their origins as exclusive social spaces for the LGBTQI+ ...community into less gay spaces - consequently changing other neighborhoods into more thriving gay spaces. Hess and Bitterman argue that these shifting spaces continue to accommodate people facing fear and discrimination, are significant both historically and culturally, and remain critical in times of social change, economic inequity, technological evolution and pubic health crises. Listen to Hess and Bitterman present their book as part of our spring 2021 public lecture series via http://ap.buffalo.edu/events/2021/gay_neighborhoods.html. #pridemonth #lgbtqi #inclusivedesign #inclusivecities #socialjustice #gayrights #gayborhoods #gayneighborhoods #ubffalo #ubuffaloarchplan Photo: The gay village in Manchester, England, surrounds Canal Street and is one of the largest gay neighborhoods anywhere (Image courtesy of Daniel Hess) See more

Check out our wrap-up coverage and photo gallery from Commencement 2021, a triumphant conclusion to a year like no other. On May 14, 2021, a distinguished group of 264 architects, urban planners, environmental designers and real estate developers joined the ranks of UB alumni as the School of Architecture and Planning convened its 49th Commencement ceremony on UB’s North Campus. http://ap.buffalo.edu/news/2021/commencement_2021.html Nearly 400 guests, including graduates and ...their families and friends, gathered for the momentous occasion in UB’s Commencement Pavilion, constructed specifically to host the university’s COVID-safe outdoor ceremonies. The in-person celebration was an exultant conclusion to one of the most disruptive and challenging years in the history of the School. @onionstudio #ubuffaloclassof2021 #ubuffalo #ubuffaloarchplan #yoududit #theydidit #congratulations #futurearchitects #futureurbanplanners #futuredevelopers #futuredesigner See more

Catch a glimpse of our latest design-build project at Silo City. Developed through multiple studios in the ecological practices graduate research group and constructed amidst the starts and stops of the COVID-19 pandemic, the project features a 60-foot diameter trellis that will evolve over time with the landscape. Composed of stainless steel viper tubing, the trellis will train the branches of willow trees planted beneath to form a canopied natural gathering space. Over time..., the willows will intertwine and graft together to become a single structure. Rigidized Metals, an architectural manufacturing company that has collaborated with the School on numerous projects at Silo City over the years, provided the stainless steel tubing and collaborated on the project's integration with the emergent post-industrial landscape, with is owned by Rigidized CEO Rick Smith. A secondary piece of the course included the creation of a field guide mapping the ecology of Silo City, including mammals, soil, water, ectotherms and invertebrates. About 50 people have touched the project in some way since fall 2019. The latest phase of the project was directed by Nick Rajkovich with previous studios directed by Joyce Hwang and Laura Garofalo, now a professor with Carnegie Mellon University. Don't miss an exhibition featuring #UBuffalo's 2020-21 Reyner Banham Fellow, Zherui Wang, @z.wagn : Volatile Ecologies: Architectural Apparatuses for Earthly Survival opens virtually on Friday, Jan. 22 at the 2021 DesignTO festival @designtofestival ‘Volatile Ecologies’ is a design expedition examining the environmental degradation in the industrial waterfront of Buffalo through the lens of scenario planning and prototype making. The exhibition features the research of Zherui... Wang in collaboration with students in his fall 2020 graduate studio at UB. Bringing together design thinking, technology, and material culture, the exhibition depicts an alternative future of the heavily polluted environment through design apparatuses and speculative drawings. With each viewing from the perspective of air, earth, and water, the apparatuses and the world they inhabit explore ideas of reparation, production, and cohabitation across spatial and temporal scales. Learn more and RSVP for the exhibition at http://ap.buffalo.edu/events/2021/volatileecologies.html #designTO #torontodesign #design #ubuffalo #ubuffaloarchplan #reynerbanham Student work featured at the exhibition includes: (1) Earthly Civics, by Hua Xiu Chen, Jennifer Persico, Cristian Copete (2) Metabolic Islets, by Thomas Cleary and Camilo Copete (3) Geobed, by Xiaofeng Jiang, Xing Hua Lin, Xuewen Zhang (4) Breath Shell - Olivia He, Alfred Cai, Yaliana Hernandez.
