The 38-year-old Express 37 LORA ANN is holding her own in a 14-boat fleet at Block Island Race Week. With two races to go, she is two points out of first sailing against much faster rated J/121s, a J/122, big modern performance cruisers and others. Owner Richard du Moulin has constantly updated his Carl Schumacher designed classic, which he has owned since 1993. New this year were two X-Drive upwind sails and a reaching spinnaker. In yesterday's race, she came back from being closed-out at the starting line to finishing only 42 seconds out of first. Congrats to Rich and his crew and good luck in the rest of the series.

In the midst of a heat wave, the 2021 Singlehanded Transpacific Yacht Race started in fog and wind on Saturday, June 19. The over 2000-mile race goes from San Francisco to Hanalei Bay on the north shore of the Hawaiian island of Kauai. Shown here is UK Sailmakers Los Angeles’ Brendan Huffman’s Santa Cruz 33 SIREN sailing under the Golden Gate bridge just after the start. He is looking forward to when he can crack sheets and get a spinnaker flying on this predominantly downwin...d race. Huffman has sailed over 30k miles and has done numerous Hawaii and offshore races in and around CA. His upwind sails are all X-Drive Silver. As of today’s tracker is in near the front of the 11-boat pack. The race had been postponed a year due to the difficulty of travel during the pandemic last year. Many adjustments due to COVID continued this year. For instance, the skippers from British Columbia were unable to go. The initial list of entries whittled down from 23 to the final count of 11, all Americans, all men, and almost all monohulls. The Power of the Port Tack Start In last night's Thursday night race, the smallest boat in the fleet read the wind on the starting line correctly and was the only boat at the favored end of the starting and and as a result was able to cross the whole fleet and sail off in clear wind. All the other boats were pinching, going slow and giving each other bad air. Emmett Dickheiser sailing the Beneteau Platu 25 RIPPLE went on to win first in fleet on corrected time. Remember, chec...k the starting line for the favored end and don't just assume you need to start on Starboard at the right side of the line. Here is a terrific looking X-Drive Silver roller-furling mainsail on an Island Packet 485. Notice how good the aerodynamic shape looks even though the sail has no battens. Also notice the extra row of reefing fibers parallel to the mast that start behind the tack patch. This extra row of fibers will help the sail hold its great shape when roller-reefed. This sail is made with UK Sailmakers’ X-Drive construction system, that has loadpath fibers that run continuously, corner t...o corner, across the sail. BETTER ROLLER FURLING MAINSAILS Cruising sailors with roller furling masts or roller furling booms who want to make their boats more lively and easier to handle should replace their worn out Dacron mains with an X-Drive sail. X-Drive sails hold their aerodynamic shape well and they roll up easier because they don’t get deeper when rolled. Dacron sails get deeper with age on their way to being blown out. A sure sign that a roller furling main is past its prime is when the sail that used to roll up well, jams constantly. The sail jams because there is extra shape in the sail that creates folds in the roll, which makes the roll too fat. X-Drive sails are reinforced with continuous high-strength, low-stretch fibers that run continuously between the three corners of the sail. These continuous fibers that run along the sails primary load paths perform the same function as the steel I-beam skeleton does in supporting a tall building. UK Sailmakers has the option of using carbon, Endumax or S-Glass fibers, depending on your performance, price and esthetic needs. The sail shown is the picture is reinforced with S-Glass yarns, allowing the sail to have a traditional all white appearance. All UK Sailmakers’ X-Drive sails made for cruising and performance cruising are made with laminates that have one side covered with a lightweight taffeta for extra durability. To save weight, racing sails do not have the full taffeta layer. The loadpath low-stretch fibers are bonded to the mylar side of the laminate. We can add protection to those yarns just in high damage areas to put protection where it is needed. The leech of all sails benefits from having extra taffeta pr...otection because when a sail luffs, the leech is the area most exposed to flogging, abrasion, and potential damage. CHECKING OUT SANTA'S VIEW Merry Chistmas from the top of Soulmates' mast (75ft or 23m up). I went up this morning to bring down my wind instruments, which I forgot to do after our last sail 26 days ago. Going up the rig when a boat is on land is not recommended and I would not have gone up if the boat was on jack-stands, but Soulmates is well-supported in a custom cradle. Once again, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. To borrow a line from the CBS Television news anchor Norah O'Donnell, "Stay positive and test negative." It's (always) a beautiful day in the neighborhood...if you own a boat. https://www.youtube.com/watch Here's a video of Californian Sailor Chris Williams visiting the "neighborhood" of his boat. On a calm, sunny day, Chris brings us along on his "maintenance and required" voyage as he fusses with that, twiddles with that, replaces the other thing, and generally messes around with his boat. What a great way to spend nine-and-one-half minutes on a wintery day. BTW, Chris wrote the 1981 biography of Ted Turner "Lead, Follow or Get Out of the Way." He also wrote for the Washington Post and the TV show "Hill Street Blues." Now he is retired in SoCal, and writes about sailing. Enjoy this and maybe send us a video of you visiting your "neighborhood."
