It is fitting and in order for us to say Thank you, Lord, for an orderly and just resolution of this presidential election. For those who are pleased and relieved at the result, we lift your joy to the Lord in thanks. For those who are displeased, we ask for grace and forbearance in accepting the loss. And for all, humility and good will. Because our scriptures exhort us to be subject to the governing the authorities when they are in fact God’s servant for your good,... we pray that God may vindicate the 51% majority vote for Joe Biden. That God protect and defend our nation from the possibility of any scorched-earth policy from the current administration. That God let justice roll down like waters, and righteousness like an ever-flowing stream. That God begin to heal wrongdoing and evil. Today marks the anniversary of the ordination of our former Assistant Pastor, the Rev. Peggy Howland, in 1958, to serve the Union Church of Bay Ridge, when our mid-level governing body was the "Brooklyn-Nassau Presbytery." The Rev. Howland was the 12th woman ordained in the predecessor denomination of the Presbyterian Church (USA), and went on to an extensive and significant career in ministry as a worker and advocate for a range of peace and justice causes and efforts. She is the recipient of several awards for her ministry work. Union Church is proud to be a part of her historic journey, and wish good health and God's blessings to our former Assistant Pastor, the Rev. Peggy Howland.

Dear Members and Neighbors A resident of our neighborhood was shot to death early in the morning of September 7th, at 7th Ave. and 74th St. Our hearts are heavy at this tragedy and loss of life in our community, and we pray for the loved ones and friends of Mike Scully, the deceased, in this time of grief and loss. As far as anyone can tell, an argument between the deceased and the unknown perpetrator apparently escalated to the shooting. We pray that the perpetrator be c...onvicted in conscience to turn himself in to authorities. As people of faith, we accept the human truth that disagreements will happen; arguments will happen. But violence never has to be the result; it should not be the result. We condemn the willful violent resolution of interpersonal conflict, and pray both that sensible actions and policies be undertaken on the part of law enforcement to reduce and restrict the presence of guns in our communities, and that God stay the hands of those who would add unnecessarily to their presence and use them to harm.
