As a part of UWGCR’s partnership with Siena College’s AmeriCorps VISTA program, our first VISTA cohort arrived to tour The Blake Annex. They learned all about the historical significance of our new space and what the future of non-profit co-working looks like. We learned all about their work at their respective sites, why they chose service, and all about them with get-to-know-you ice breakers! We’re looking forward to continuing this partnership with Siena as we introduce the next few cohorts this summer.

Today we commemorate the events that took place on June 19, 1865, the day that enslaved African-Americans in Galveston, Texas learned they were free. Despite the Emancipation Proclamation being signed on January 1, 1863 (nearly two and a half years prior), Juneteenth honors the true end to slavery in the United States. If you're looking for resources or ways to participate in the community celebration, check out some of our partner organizations that are hosting Juneteenth events in the capital region: African American Cultural Center of the Capital District @africanamericanculturalcenter, Underground Railroad Education Center @undergroundrailroad_ec, Building Blocks Together @buildingblockstogether, SAFFE @saffenpo, Black Nurses Coalition @blacknursescoalition.org, and Hamilton Hill Arts Center.
