Fang feng, is a traditional Chinese herb and is one of the most commonly used during cold and flu season and for good reason. Phytochemical and pharmacological studies have shown that the main constituents of Fang feng achromones, coumarins, acid esters, and polyacetylenes, exhibited significant anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and immunoregulatory activities in clinical trials.* From a TCM perspective this herb is said to release the Exterior and expel External Wind. Useful... in "chills," it is probably one of the top three most popular herbs in preventative immune remedies in China. Sundew, drosera rotundifolia. A carnivorous medicinal herb. Useful in spasmodic coughs and asthma. It is endangered so not something I would ever have in my dispensary, but I know an excellent herbalist Brian Lamb who uses it as it grew in abundance near his Scottish herbal practice and he always told me about its usefulness. . . . .... . .photo @picartnature #drosera #sundew #herbs #carniverousplants #carniverousplant #herbalist #medicalherbs See more

Still some time to get some nettle seeds! Nettle gives us three remedies in herbal medicine: The seed pictured is seen as an adrenal tonic. If I am going through a phase of afternoon tiredness the nettle seed is often what I reach for, better that a coffee or tea! The leaf, rich in minerals, reduces histamine great for allergies and inflammation. You can use for hay fever or joint pains.... The nettle root we use mainly for prostate health. It is also the home to 100s of insects! One of the reason to be careful when harvesting it to let all the bugs out! . . . . . #nettle #nettleseed #nettleroot #herbalism #herbalist #medicaherbalist #herb #herbs #medicinalherbs #roots #allergyremedies #allergyrelief #prostate #adrenaline #adrenalfatigue

Chamomile There are two types- Roman chamomile also known as English chamomile (Chamaemelum nobile) and German Chamomile (Matricaria chamomilla) they have very similar properties but German chamomile is generally seen as stronger and contains more of the beautiful blue oil Chamazulene which has anti-inflammatory properties. Roman chamomile is a perennial herb and grows closer to the ground with German Chamomile being an annual but freely self seeing. I am always finding cha...momile seedlings on my deck in spring ready to pot up. Chamomile is not a mild or a weak remedy, and it is amazingly useful herb. Because it is familiar and it is easy to pick up in a tea bag more or less anywhere people think of it as being not a powerful medicine. And while people focus on trendy turmeric or awesome ashwagandha people forget cool chamomile! If you want to try its medicinal properties at home and you only have access to the tea bags, buy them from a health store rather than a supermarket and make the tea strong, 3-4 teabags per cup and brewed for 5-10 minutes while covered.Bitter Chamomile, the mother of the gut is good for: nervousness indigestion stomach cramps insomnia a natural anti-histamine topical anti-inflammatory actives are flavonoids and volatile oils so keep a lid on your tea photo: mine #dontforgetthecommonherbs #roses #depression #vitaminc #ibs #herbs #organic #vegan #tea #health #plantbased #nature #healthy #herbal #natural #food #askmeanything #herbalmedicine #wellness #meditation #healing #naturalremedy #love #plants #alkaline #loveplants #chamomile #ibs #anxiety #anti-inflammatory

#amplifymelanatedvoices I have been studying and working in herbal medicine for over 25 years, and I have come across precious few black people at herbal conferences, in education and even sadly as patients. When I was at university, the indigenous herbal traditions that were held up and studied came from Ayurveda and TCM, rather than traditional African Herbal medicine. In fact I have never seen a major herbal medicine course with a module called African Herbal Medici...ne- correct me here if I am wrong. I am ashamed to say I had never searched the hashtag #blackherbalist before last week. Though I had searched #herbalist #herb and #herbalmedicine. Though I have always stood against racism, marched for change and one of my closest family members is black, my white privilege as a herbalist stopped me thinking of the importance of that tag and thinking to search it. I am sure it is a tag every black herbalist searches out pretty damn quickly! Separately from herbal medicine the wellness industry that has sprung up in the last ten years is one of the most white privileged spaces I have seen, please followed, if this makes you uncomfortable, please think about why. But back to black herbalists! Here is a list of black herbalists, some I already knew of, but most I have only recently come to follow. Personally, I promise I will continue to do the work it needs for a lasting change to happen, in my education, my life and among my family and friends. Corona virus. So today I received an interesting article, it was sharing the official Chinese government herbal protocols for treating the corona virus. Traditional Chinese herbal medicine is a significant part of the official medical guidelines for treatment issued by the national government. I will post the link at the bottom for any herbalist and acupuncturists who follow me- it’s probably too complicated for the general public. But for the general public here is th...e herbal prevention advise. It looks like the disease is related to dampness and heat and those with a weakened spleen meridian will be more susceptible to a stronger illness. Maybe why some people barely get sick and others do. So if your acupuncturist has ever commented on you having a weakened spleen then that’s you! Also you can check your tongue if the spleen is weak the tongue is often swollen and tooth marked, also often coated white or yellow if dampness or damp heat. If low spleen Qi, there is often digestion issues with bloating, loose stools, often tiredness and brain fog. I will copy the recipe here for prevention given by the Chinese government but as you will see it a) contains cicada! And b) many herbs that are not readily available to the public. The only one that is is astragalus. I will be stocking the remedy with a cicada free version! But if you want you can just take astragalus and do other things for the spleen like eat cooked foods and avoid damp producing foods like sugar, milk, refined grains etc (google spleen nourishing diet) Formula: astragalus 10g /atractylodes 2g /cicada 10 g / Forsythia suspensa 15g/ Forsythia suspensa (fang feng) 15g/ Agastache rugosa (huoxiang) 15g. Please note during an acute infection the remedy will change. So if it does look like it is spreading in a wide-spread way to the rest of the world I will update then. Or you can look at the link below. . . . #coronavirus #coronavirusprevention #coronavirusprotection #coronavirusherbs #coronavirusherbalmedicine #immunity #pneumonia #infectionherbs #herbalmedicine #herbalist #herbalistsofinstagram #herbalists #medicalherbalist https://mp.weixin.qq.com/s/_NJ7Cr700VCkeXfe9vUO4

So unless you live somewhere like Arizona you should be taking vitamin D! So many people coming in the office right now with very low levels right now- so if you are tired, run down, achey, feeling blue low D could be to blame. Vitamin D prevents viruses including the flu low levels linked to : depression; aching bones; MS; autoimmune disease; diabetes; osteoporosis; psoriasis; certain cancers including breast cancer; cardiovascular disease. the vitamin D council recommends 5000 iu a day. #vitamind #vitamins #sunshine #depression #ache #achesandpains #viruses #herbalmedicine #summer #summervacation #2019 #newyearnewyou #nyc #westvillage photo: hubby

Suffering with seasonal affective disorder (SAD) - look no further! Rose root also known as Rhodiola rosea is a great herb for when you are lackluster. This gnarly looking tree produces one of the most potent herbal medicines for high cholesterol. Commifora wightii (Mukul Mhyrr tree) contains the steroid guglsterone that has been shown to reduce synthesis of cholesterol in the liver. I have recommended it to many clients over the years with high cholesterol, which was subsequently successfully lowered by taking this herb. The herb also has other many effects including as an anti-inflammatory, anti-cystic acne, and it has... also been shown to induce apoptosis in cancer cell lines which backs up its traditional use in cancer treatment. Make sure the source is sustainably grown rather than wild crafted. image : Pinterest #mhyrr #insence #cholesterol #acne #vegan #tea #health #plantbased #nature #healthy #herbal #natural #food #askmeanything #herbalmedicine #wellness #meditation #healing #naturalremedy #love #plants #alkaline #loveplants #detox #healing #antioxidants #healthy #myrrh

Happy Thanksgiving to all who celebrate! Before you eat the massive meal here are some tips incase you DON’T have any herbal medicine or supplements to hand. You should find most of these in the kitchen. 1) An hour before the meal have a black coffee as the bitter coffee will cause your liver to be stimulated to make bile and your pancreas to make enzymes. (Of corse you can have a bitter aperitifs here!) 2) Just before the meal have two tablespoons of apple cider vinega...r in a glass of water, this will help to digest the food but also reduce the blood sugar spike from all the carbs. 3)Take a moment to yourself and try four rounds of 4,7,8 breathing which stimulates the Vagus nerve, the vagus is nerve stimulates production of digestive enzymes, stomach acid and has a calming effect. Breath in for 4, hold for 7, breath out for 8 ideally through the mouth. Repeat four times. 4)During the meal chew your food very well, the digestive enzymes begin their job in the mouth, and the increased surface area of the food will aid the breakdown and reduce bloating. 5)After the meal take a carminative herb in the form of a tea, these are herbs that reduce bloating and gas. Examples you can find in the kitchen include fennel, cardamom, caraway, dill seed, peppermint, orange peel, anise seed and ginger. What ever you have on the list bash up a bit and add two teaspoons to a cup of freshly boiled water. Cover with a plate and let it brew for ten minutes, strain and then enjoy! You can drink more of this tea in the hours after the meal. Enjoy time with your family and friends! . . . . . . .
