On Wednesday, December 7, 2016, Dr. Larry Frank, President of UD4H and Eric Fox, GIS Manager at UD4H attended the launch of the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC) 500 Cities Database in Dallas, TX. In early December, the CDC released the 500 Cities Database which contains 27 health outcomes for the 500 largest cities in the United States. The health outcomes leverage the CDC Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) self-reported data available nationwide.... The 500 Cities database includes 5 unhealthy behaviors such as prevalence of smoking, 15 measures of chronic disease including type-2 diabetes and high blood pressure and 5 preventative health indicators such as medication intake for high blood pressure. The 500 Cities project is timely and synergistic with the UD4H development of the National Environmental Database (NED) which offers built, natural and social environmental metrics to assess how neighborhood context can support or hinder public health.
