We hear of drownings on social media and from news outlets every summer and sometimes they are classified as "dry" or "secondary" types of drownings. But what exactly does that mean? Dry drowning occurs when an individual takes in a small amount of water through his or her nose and/or mouth which causes a spasm in the airway. Dry drowning occurs soon after exiting the water. Secondary drowning occurs when water enters the lungs and caus...es inflammation or swelling that makes it difficult or impossible for the body to transfer oxygen to carbon dioxide and vice versa. There can however be a delay of up to 24 hours before the individual shows signs of distress. What are these symptoms of distress? If a child falls into the water but is then pulled out, this could trigger dry or secondary drowning. If this happens, the best step is to call your doctor and describe the incident. Watch out for rapid shallow breathing, nostril-flaring, fatigue, persistent coughing, or vomiting. In general while dry and secondary drownings are very scary, they are extremely rare. They make up only about 1-2% of drowning incidents. Like if you learned something new! #themoreyouknow See more

? We'll teach you! Ask your child to identify a grown up. Make sure they understand that they can only swim with a grown up. If you have another child, especially one who can swim, then ask your child if it's okay to swim with their sibling alone. It is important for them to know that even if another child can swim, your child cannot swim with them alone. Make sure your child knows they cannot get... toys by themselves. Children sometimes drop toys in the deep end of the pool as they walk, and it is important for them to know they cannot lean in to try to get it themselves. This is especially more true for toys that can float; a child is more likely to reach to try and get it themselves. Ask your child to identify where the stairs and ladder are. Make sure they understand the purpose of the stairs and ladder, along with how the pool wall can be used as a tool to get to those exit areas. Make sure your child knows how to exit out of the pool using the pool wall. Teach them to put their elbows on the pool wall, so they can place their hands down to push up their knees. We hope these tips were helpful! It is #watersafetywednesday We want to provide you with some interesting statistics that we found on the @diversityinaquatics website. The @diversityinaquatics platform shares crucial information that educates those about the lack of aquatic safety instruction in underrepresented communities. Below are very shocking statistics that need to be kept in mind:... 79% of low-income families have little to no ability to swim 64% of of Black children and 45% of Hispanic children have little to no ability to swim Black children aged 5-9 are 5.5 times likelier to die from drowning than white children in pools Why does this happen? It happens because of the lack of diversity in swim instruction courses that allow swimmers to learn water safety and basic swim skills. We want to support water safety and swim instruction for diverse communities. If you are a part of these underrepresented communities, please reach out if you have any questions about our services, or the ways we can help impact this mission. We want to help and support this journey for diversity in swim #Watersafetywednesday #WSW #watersafety #americanredcross #watersafetylongisland #LIwatersafety #longisland #longislandmoms #nassaucounty #suffolkcounty #lifeguard #CPR #AED #diversityinaquatics #swimdiversity #diverseswim #teachswim See more
