Relatively few in our sport had the privilege of meeting Ian Reed. Those who did undoubtedly were fascinated with his stories and envious of his energy. Ian threw discus in the 1952 Olympics and won the Commonwealth Games in 1950. Young Ian gave up throwing because he didn’t know about opportunities for older athletes in field and track. He played masters tennis with great success then, at 86, re-started throwing. He had disappointments when his most impressive accomplishment...s on his return were not officially recognized. His Age Group World Record is over 30% farther than the next closest M90 thrower! Ian loved athletics and knew much about the sport’s history. He silently lobbied IAAF for rule changes that would make throwing events rules safer, less restricting and in line with other events. Ian woke up one morning about 6 weeks ago feeling better than he had in a while. He and his beloved Iris went to a local park where he could throw. He was tired after throwing about ten times. He turned to Iris and said that he knew he could still set the world record classic Ian! He was matter of fact and logical. When he found out he had cancer, Ian didn’t seem to be bothered. He felt he lived a long and good life. Those he touched must also believe that and know he could have toasted his M90 record. The competition will take place from July 18 - August 2, ...2020. https://www.mastersrankings.com/2020-worldwide-virtual-m// We conceived this event to bring the world together in these unusual times through our sport, give you something to shoot for and include, virtually, as many athletes from around the world as possible. There are already entries from 41 countries with athletes from many others committed to participate. This event is truly global with athletes,from the Cook Islands, Uruguay, South Africa, Costa Rica, Singapore, Serbia, Malaysia and Nigeria, to name a few, are banding together to help each other and finding ways to safely participate. A great addition is some Para and transplant athletes are joining us for this event. Some athletes are really getting creative. A female athlete from Canada was hoping to compete in Toronto and meet up with her family. Instead she is doing the Worldwide Masters Virtual Challenge and plans to have cardboard cut-outs of her family members to motivate her as she does her events. Last week we announced 2020 World Wide Virtual Masters Challenge will take place between July 18 and August 2, 2020. The response and worldwide interest have been awesome! UPDATES: 1) Running, race walking and combined events have been added to the event which started as jumps and throws only 2) Registration will open on June 3, 2020. (Use the link in this post). 3) Entry fees. The cost to enter this event is $2.35 USD or 2.00 per individual event 4) The last day for registration will be July 15, 2020 5) The event date range has been extended; it is now from July 18 to August 2, 2020. 6) All results must be submitted by midnight, US Pacific Coast Time, on August 4, 2020. There will be no late results submission capability. 7) Plan on submitting your results as you complete your events beginning July 18, 2020. This will allow for more timely results and minimize overloading the website. 8) Awards. A certificate template will be available to be downloaded which a participant can add their details, rank and performance in an individual event 9) Sponsored awards. For the Throws Pentathlon a person has kindly offered to supply a trophy.
