U.S. Merchant Marine Academy 04.02.2021

The campus is pretty quiet while the wet, clingy snow keeps falling. Food delivery seems to be the order of the day as midshipman make their way from the barracks to the front gate and back. The campus is fully blanketed in a whole new layer of snow. The grounds staff have been plowing and treating since early this morning and we suspect they will be at it most of the night. We hope you are safe and warm on Super Bowl Sunday, wherever this post finds you. Here are a few more photos of snow at Kings Point. Like and Share at U.S. Merchant Marine Academy - USMMA.

And we're at it again! More snow today. We started Sunday with another blast of snow that promises to blanket the campus once more. Earlier this morning, Superintedent Vice Admiral Buono visited the waterfront and captured this video from the pier. Different than last weekend, the snow today is wetter and is falling without much wind. We expect up to six inches as predictions call for snow throughout the day. Bundle up, USMMA! Today was a beautiful sunny day at Kings Point. We hope everyone made the most of it, because there’s more snow in the forecast. Thank you to Midshipman Jack Pellegrino, ‘23, for sharing this great photo. Like and Share U.S. Merchant Marine Academy - USMMA

Snowmageddon clean-up continues at USMMA in the aftermath of Winter Storm Orlena. We are plowing and shoveling around campus to clean up the tons of snow that fell on us. The photos below feature key points around the campus the day before smowmageddon, and the day after, but just two days apart. USMMA is a beautiful campus on a normal day, but blanketed in snow.... even more so. By the way, we are expecting another winter blast over the weekend. Stay tuned. It’s time to Deck the Hulls! Normally, at his time of year, USMMA gets into the holiday spirit by decorating the T/V Kings Pointer, Wiley Hall, Mariner’s Memorial Chapel, the barracks, and academic buildings. This year we invite our Kings Point community to share photos from wherever you are spending the holidays at home or at sea. We can’t wait to see your tree, menorah, kinara, ornaments, home, ship, galley, lounge or front porch. We would love to see you and your pets donning your ugliest sweaters or KP swag. To provide a little inspiration, here are a few photos from last year. Share your photo into the comments. The more the merrier! Like and Share U.S. Merchant Marine Academy - USMMA.

With the second evolution complete and the third underway, our cadets aboard the T/S General Rudder in Texas, continue to develop skills at sea and build sea time. Thanks to all those who are teaching, coaching, and mentoring aboard the vessel. Here are a few new photos of the challenging second evolution where weather was a factor, but as one faculty member opined, Smooth seas don’t make a skilled sailor. Also, the group said goodbye to CAPT Muccin, who left on schedule after two weeks with the crew. Thank you, sir. Check out these photos of the group, hard at work at crew duties and sea projects. National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day. The White House has issued a Presidential Proclamation that states, in part, On the morning of December 7, 1941, Imperial Japanese forces ambushed the Naval Station Pearl Harbor on the Hawaiian island of Oahu. Tragically, 2,403 Americans perished during the attack, including 68 civilians. On this National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day, we solemnly honor and uphold the memory of the patriots who lost their lives that day ‘a date which w...ill live in infamy.’ At USMMA we honor all those who served our Nation in the Second World War, including our merchant mariners, often called the fourth arm of defense. Tragically, over 9,000 of these brave men perished supporting our freedoms, suffering one of the highest rates of casualties of any service. Among those who made the ultimate sacrifice were, 142 USMMA Cadet-Midshipmen. On this chilly Kings Point day, we thought we would share this photo of Third Class Midshipmen, Hailey Hicks (left) and Hope Germanakos (right), on a 110 day in the Arabian Sea. The sea year partners are seen on the bridge wing of the Maersk Atlanta as she traveled to Karachi, Pakistan from Salalah, Oman. Over their 90 days together, the pair traveled coastwise from Norfolk to Newark before going foreign to: Algeciras, Spain, Port Said, Egypt, Djibouti, Djibouti, Salalah, Oman, Jebel Ali, Dubai, Port Qasim, Pakistan, Pipivav and Mumbai, India and back! They completed 20 additional days on coastwise orders, making several stops between Newark, NJ and Texas. Like and Share U.S. Merchant Marine Academy - USMMA
