Valley American Legion

On October 23, 1983 at 6:22 a.m., a large delivery truck drove to the Beirut International Airport where the Marine Barracks was located. After turning onto an ...access road leading to the compound, the driver rushed through a barbed-wire fence, passed between two sentry posts, crashed through the gate, and slammed into the lobby of the barracks. The driver detonated explosives with the power equal to more than 12,000 pounds of TNT. The explosion crumbled the four-story building, crushing service members to death while they were sleeping. The terrorist attack killed 220 Marines and 21 other U.S. service members who were stationed there to help keep the peace in a nation torn by war. IT’S OVER! 75 Years Ago: On August 14, 1945, it was announced that Japan had surrendered unconditionally to the Allies, effectively ending World War II. Since t...hen, August 14 and 15 have been known as Victory over Japan Day, or simply V-J Day. This term has also been used for September 2, 1945, when Japan’s formal surrender took place aboard the U.S.S. Missouri, anchored in Tokyo Bay. Coming several months after the surrender of Nazi Germany, Japan’s capitulation in the Pacific brought six years of hostilities to a final and highly anticipated close. There was a huge celebration in Syracuse. However, there was a concern over what millions of returning soldiers and sailors would do to the economy. Women quietly accepted their layoffs. And a cascade of long-postponed marriages ensued. After having suffered without during the depression and the war, people were ready to buy and become consumers. Young married couples wanted to start households and raise a family. And hence we got the Baby Boom generation. But there was also an unprecedented surge in the economy as millions of new households started, resulting in millions of new homes being built, and even more consumer products being purchased. This booming economy had an immediate impact in Syracuse up through the 1970s as industries like Carrier expanded and GE built a huge complex in Salina that was initially established to manufacture radios and TVs. The GI Bill brought a surge of enrollments at SU and helped give birth to LeMoyne College. All of us today are a product of the freedom purchased by the sacrifice, sweat, blood and many lives of the World War II generation, and for that entire generation. On this day 76 years ago July 12, 1944 Brigadier General Theodore Roosevelt Jr. son of President Teddy Roosevelt died in Normandy France. Roosevelt successfully... helped to lead the invasion at Utah Beach on D-Day and famously stated "We will Start The War From Right Here" after landing 1 mile off course. Roosevelt received The Medal Of Honor for gallantry on June 6, 1944. Considered the for...gotten war, by the many overlooked veterans who fought it, their sacrifice and service will always be remembered by The American Legion. In prosperous South Korea, 52 million people live in freedom. This would not have been possible without our Korean War veterans. Due to their age, survivors of that war are among the most vulnerable to the ravages of COVID-19. It’s an opportune time for Legionnaires to buddy check any Korean War veterans that are in their communities. Thank them for their service.
