Throughout most of the world, significant restrictions have been placed on freedoms to move about, practices that are often collectively referred to as "lockdowns." In the United States, protestors have been calling for the lockdowns to end and, indeed, all 50 states have begun to ease up on restrictions. For many, a first reaction to the protests was shock at how reckless they seemed, but there are clear and legitimate concerns about these practices. This webinar will look at the nature and limits of different arguments that can be given to justify policies of "lockdown." In particular, the discussion will explore how the costs of lockdown can be weighed in a morally plausible way against the costs arising from the increased spread of COVID-19. Many of these issues come back to a central question: Under what circumstances can some people be expected, even compelled, to bear costs for the sake of others? CCEIA is very pleased to have Christian Barry, professor and head of school in philosophy at the Australian National University, as our honored speaker in a virtual Zoom conference on Wednesday, June 9, 2020 from 7:00 to 8:00 PM ET to discuss "The Ethics of Lockdown" with Carnegie Council President Joel Rosenthal. Barry is also co-editor of the Journal of Political Philosophy. His research focuses on ethical theory, philosophy of action, and international justice. His work includes books with Sanjay Reddy, International Trade and Labour Standards: A Proposal for Linkage; and Gerhard Øverland, Responding to Global Poverty: Harm, Responsibility and Agency; and articles in many leading philosophy, politics, and law journals. He is a former program officer and Global Ethics Fellow at Carnegie Council. Please join us for what is sure to be a fascinating and memorable conversation.
