Carotid Artery Disease is caused by cholesterol buildup in the blood vessels that go to the brain. When a blockage becomes severe, a carotid stenting or a carotid endarterectomy may be recommended. Carotid stenting is a procedure in which the surgeon places a small stent in the artery to widen it, while in a carotid endarterectomy, the surgeon opens and cleans the artery.
