Vets Finding Vets Announces Hero Tours by Barb Cessna, Vets Finding Vets Coordinator Vets Finding Vets is excited to announce the first of two Hero Tours to be held at Lake View Cemetery which is specifically for Veterans and a guest, at no charge.... The first is coming up on Saturday, June 12, at 1 pm, when Hugh Golden will highlight a few of the hundreds of Veterans who lie at rest in Soldier’s Circle. This honored and beautiful area, designated for Veterans who served and lost their lives during WWI, was later opened up to include Veterans who served from WWI through more recent wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. We will meet at Soldier’s Circle, which can be easily accessed from the gate on Lake View Avenue. We can socially distance from each other in this open area. Stay tuned, the next Hero Tour will take place on Saturday, July 10th, at 1 pm and will highlight Veterans who were buried in the first Veteran burial area known as Monument Hill.
Today is Armed Forces Day and has been celebrated on the 3rd Sat of May since 1950. All branches of the US Military are honored, including National Guard, Reserves, and the newly formed Space Force. The CDC gives you permission to hug your favorite Vet(s)! Thank you Veterans - past and present!
Be sure to fly your POW/MIA flag today, and on September 17th. Today marks National Former Prisoner of War Recognition Day, and in 1979 the third Friday in September was chosen to be National POW/MIA Day. Although both days remind us of this somber tragedy of war, let's also remember the families of those service members who still wait hopefully for search and recovery crews to make their hoped-for discovery and bring final closure.
This weekend marks the 384th Birthday of the National Guard! Vets Finding Vets is proud to be documenting enlistments of our local Old Soldiers. GO ARMY!!
