For his extraordinary actions on October 26, 1942 while serving as a Platoon Sergeant with the 7th Marines the Battle of Guadalcanal in the Solomon Islands, U.S.... Marine Corps Colonel Mitchell Paige of Charleroi, Pennsylvania was awarded the Medal of Honor. On that day, after all of the other Marines in his platoon were killed or wounded, Platoon Sergeant Paige operated four machine guns, singlehandedly stopping an entire Japanese regiment. Paige fired his machine gun until it was destroyed, then moved from gun to gun, keeping up the fire until he finally received reinforcements. Colonel Paige continued to serve our nation until 1959. He passed away in 2003 at 85 years old. He was the last surviving Medal of Honor recipient of the Guadalcanal campaign. His Medal of Honor citation reads: "For extraordinary heroism and conspicuous gallantry in action above and beyond the call of duty while serving with a company of marines in combat against enemy Japanese forces in the Solomon Islands on 26 October 1942. When the enemy broke through the line directly in front of his position, P/Sgt. Paige, commanding a machinegun section with fearless determination, continued to direct the fire of his gunners until all his men were either killed or wounded. Alone, against the deadly hail of Japanese shells, he fought with his gun and when it was destroyed, took over another, moving from gun to gun, never ceasing his withering fire against the advancing hordes until reinforcements finally arrived. Then, forming a new line, he dauntlessly and aggressively led a bayonet charge, driving the enemy back and preventing a breakthrough in our lines. His great personal valor and unyielding devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the U.S. Naval Service." We are eternally grateful for Colonel Paige's service to our nation. May you rest in peace, sir. #WWII #WorldWarII #NeverForget #GreatestGeneration #service #RIP #Pennsylvania #MarineCorps #USMarineCorps #history
