MAYVILLE DRINKING WATER UPDATE DATE: May 26, 2021 FROM: John Buxton, Public Works Superintendent This is an update on the status of our drinking water supply and infrastructure improvements in... the Mayville Water System. The new permanent well #4 water pump was installed May 11 th and is operating very satisfactorily. Unfortunately well #4 is randomly discharging an unpredictable quantity of water that is rusty red in appearance. The rusty (cola colored) water is caused by iron and manganese minerals present in the water wells aquifer. The colored water is pumped into the water distribution system and we experience this unpleasant water in our homes. The water is safe to drink but will cause laundry to become discolored. On May 28 th JD Northrup Construction, the Village’s water contractor should have all the new water main piping installed in the Village. The new water storage tank will be filled and the only remaining task will be restoration work. By June 11 th the Mayville Water Department expects to be adding a poly orthophosphate chemical to our water as the water it is being pumped from well #4. The poly orthophosphate should control the rusty colored water situation. June 1 st will begin construction on a granular activated carbon filtering plant at the DPW Shop on Morris Street. This plant will remove, by filtration, PFNA contaminated water from Village well #1. The State of New York has pledged $1,000,000.00 to construct this new filtering plant which is expected to be operating by September 1 st . The new filtering plant will provide much needed supplemental and emergency drinking water. July will likely bring water conservation efforts as water demands increase and water production with only one usable water well is limited. Just an update on what has been happening behind the scenes with the State and County regarding our water situation. I meet with State and County officials every week. It is important to note that I have made the point very clear that the Village of Mayville should not be held responsible for funding since this was a State Fire operation performed at the request of the County. So far I have not had any pushback on that statement and so far the State and County have been a gr...eat help and I appreciate it. I am proud to tell you that on April 23, after much hard work the Village was awarded $1,000,000.00 to use to install a filtering plant to remove the PFNA contaminants from well #1. Attention Village of Mayville Water Customers. The water conservation and boil water orders for the Village of Mayville water customers have been lifted. It is no longer necessary to boil water for drinking or food preparation. If you have any questions please call 716-269-4801. Thank you so much to our residents, businesses and visitors for conserving water at this important time. Our new well pump is in place and things are going just as planned. The Village of Mayville will be handing out water at the town of Chautauqua Highway Department building at 50 Patterson Street Mayville New York on Sunday from 10:30 to 12:30. Tops Markets has generously donated water that will be available to Mayville residents from 2:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. on Monday at Tops parking lot in Mayville.

We will be distributing water until 6:30 tonight and we will also be there from 10:30 am - 12:30 pm Saturday and Sunday. Please go to the Town of Chautauqua Highway Department. Please follow Covid rules and stay in your car. We will put water in your car for you. Thank you for being patient while we sort through this. Please pick up water at Town of Chautauqua Highway Building, 50 Patterson St. Stay in your car and people will put water in your car for you. Today from 4:30-6:30 pm and tomorrow from 10:30 am - 12:30 pm. We continue to have your best interest in mind as we work on this problem. We will all get through this together. Great to see neighbors helping each other this morning and sharing cases of water as needed. Please continue to follow Covid guidelines as we manage this issue.
