God bless a hopeful day January 27 Free at Last... Bible in a Year: Exodus 1618 Matthew 18:120 If the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed. John 8:36 Today's Scripture & Insight: John 8:3136 Twenty long years passed before British journalist John McCarthya five-year hostage during Lebanon’s grueling civil warmet the man who negotiated his release. When McCarthy finally met U.N. envoy Giandomenico Picco, McCarthy simply said, Thank you for my freedom! His heartfelt words carried great weight because Picco had risked his own life during dangerous negotiations to secure freedom for McCarthy and others. We as believers can relate to such hard-won freedom. Jesus gave up His lifeenduring death on a Roman crossto secure spiritual freedom for all people, including each of us. Now as His children, we know it is for freedom that Christ has set us free, the apostle Paul boldly declared (Galatians 5:1). The gospel of John also teaches of freedom in Christ, noting, If the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed (John 8:36). But free in what ways? In Jesus, we experience freedom not only from sin and its hold on us but also from guilt, shame, worry, Satan’s lies, superstitions, false teaching, and eternal death. No longer hostages, we have freedom to show love to enemies, walk in kindness, live with hope, and love our neighbors. As we follow the Holy Spirit’s leading, we can forgive as we’ve been forgiven. For all of this, let’s thank God today. Then let’s love so others will know the power of His freedom too. By: Patricia Raybon Sign in to track your progress! God of healing be with you January 26 The Problem Within... Bible in a Year: Exodus 1415 Matthew 17 Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest heaven! Matthew 21:9 Today's Scripture & Insight: Matthew 21:19 A few years ago, a woodpecker began tapping on the siding of our home. We thought the problem was only external. Then one day, my son and I climbed up a ladder into the attic only to have a bird fly past our startled faces. The problem was worse than we’d suspected: it was inside our house. When Jesus arrived in Jerusalem, the crowd was hoping He would be the one to fix their external problemtheir oppression by the Romans. They went wild, shouting, Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest heaven! (Matthew 21:9). This was the moment they’d been waiting for; God’s appointed King had come. If God’s chosen Deliverer was going to begin reforming things, wouldn’t He start with all the wrong out there? But in most gospel accounts, the triumphal entry is followed by Jesus driving out exploitative moneychangers . . . from the temple (vv. 1213). He was cleaning house, and from the inside out. That’s what happens when we welcome Jesus as King; He comes to set things rightand He starts with us. He makes us confront the evil inside. Jesus on the donkey is like the warriors in the Trojan horse. The horse was welcomed as a symbol of peace, but its ultimate aim was unconditional surrender. Jesus our King requires the same from us. By: Glenn Packiam Sign in to track your progress! SIGN IN Reflect & Pray What does it mean for Jesus to be your King? Why is it vital for you to surrender your all to Him? Dear Jesus, You’re the true King. Forgive me for wanting You to only fix the problems in the world around me and not to confront the sin in my heart. God bless you with good mentors / friends for you and bless you as you mentor someone January 25 Ripple Effect... Bible in a Year: Exodus 1213 Matthew 16 Because the hand of the Lord my God was on me, I took courage and gathered leaders from Israel to go up with me. Ezra 7:28 Today's Scripture & Insight: Ezra 8:1521 The little Bible college in northern Ghana didn’t look impressivejust a tin-roofed cinder-block building and a handful of students. Yet Bob Hayes poured his life into those students. He gave them leadership roles and encouraged them to preach and teach, despite their occasional reluctance. Bob passed away years ago, but dozens of thriving churches, schools, and two additional Bible institutes have sprung up across Ghanaall started by graduates of that humble school. During the reign of King Artaxerxes (465424 bc), Ezra the scribe assembled a band of Jewish exiles to return to Jerusalem. But Ezra found no Levites among them (Ezra 8:15). He needed Levites to serve as priests. So he commissioned leaders to bring attendants to us for the house of our God (v. 17). They did so (vv. 1820), and Ezra led them all in fasting and prayer (v. 21). Ezra’s name means helper, a characteristic that resides at the heart of good leadership. Under Ezra’s prayerful guidance, he and his protégés would lead a spiritual awakening in Jerusalem (see chapters 910). All they had needed was a little encouragement and wise direction. That’s how God’s church works too. As good mentors encourage and build us up, we learn to do the same for others. Such an influence will reach far beyond our lifetime. Work done faithfully for God stretches into eternity. By: Tim Gustafson Sign in to track your progress! SIGN IN Reflect & Pray Who is your primary spiritual mentor? Let’s ask God to guide us with everything we do December 9 God’s Guidance... Bible in a Year: Daniel 1112 Jude Blessed is the one who does not walk in step with the wicked or stand in the way that sinners take or sit in the company of mockers. Psalm 1:1 Today's Scripture & Insight: Psalm 1:13 When their bank accidentally deposited $120,000 into their account, a couple went on a shopping spree. They purchased an SUV, a camper, and two four-wheelers in addition to paying off bills. Discovering the deposit error, the bank told the couple to return the money. Unfortunately, the husband and wife had already spent it. They were then charged with felony theft. When the couple arrived at the local court, the husband said to a reporter, We took some bad legal advice. The two learned that following bad advice (and spending what wasn’t theirs) could lead to making a mess of their lives. In contrast, the psalmist shared wise advice that can help us avoid messing up in life. He wrote that those who find genuine fulfillmentwho are blessedrefuse to be influenced by the advice of those who don’t serve God (Psalm 1:1). They know that unwise, ungodly counsel can lead to unseen dangers and costly consequences. Also, they’re motivated by (find delight in) and preoccupied with (meditate on) the timeless and unshakable truths of Scripture (v. 2). They’ve found that submitting to God’s guidance leads to stability and fruitfulness (v. 3). When we’re making decisions, big or small, about our careers, money, relationships, and more, may we seek God’s wisdom found in the Bible, godly counsel, and the leading of the Holy Spirit. His guidance is essential and trustworthy for living a fulfilling life and not creating messes. By: Marvin Williams Sign in to track your progress! God bless with a cheerful day December 8 On the Same Team... Bible in a Year: Daniel 810 3 John Encourage one another and build each other up. 1 Thessalonians 5:11 Today's Scripture & Insight: 1 Thessalonians 5:111, 1618 When Philadelphia Eagle’s quarterback Carson Wentz returned to the field after healing from a severe injury, the NFL team’s backup quarterback, Nick Foles, graciously returned to the bench. Although competing for the same position, the two men chose to support each other and remained confident in their roles. One reporter observed that the two athletes have a unique relationship rooted in their faith in Christ shown through their ongoing prayers for each other. As others watched, they brought honor to God by remembering they were on the same teamnot just as Eagles quarterbacks, but as believers in Jesus representing Him. The apostle Paul reminds believers to live as children of the light awaiting Jesus’ return (1 Thessalonians 5:56). With our hope secure in the salvation Christ has provided, we can shrug off any temptations to compete out of jealousy, insecurity, fear, or envy. Instead, we can encourage one another and build each other up (v. 11). We can respect spiritual leaders who honor God and live in peace as we serve together to accomplish our shared goaltelling people about the gospel and encouraging others to live for Jesus (vv. 1215). As we serve on the same team, we can heed Paul’s command: Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus (vv. 1618).
