We want to know...what's your pet most thankful for this year?

Thanksgiving is less than a week away! Avoid feeding your pets these foods in order to keep them safe. And please be watchful of the trash, unattended food or plates, and dropped food.

With the uptick in local COVID-19 cases, this is a friendly reminder about pets and hand sanitizer. Hand sanitizer is generally not something pets like to smell or ingest, but just in case they do your pet can become sick! Most hand sanitizers contain ethanol, which is toxic to pets. This includes commercial or homemade hand sanitizers. Ethanol, and other alcohols can cause lethargy, vomiting, incoordination and drops in blood pressure or body temperature. In extreme ingestions, seizures or trouble breathing can occur. In most cases, pets won't ingest these, but some hand sanitizers have scents or additional items added in that may make them more palatable for inquisitive pets. If you think that your pet has ingested a foreign substance, call pet poison control right away!

Do you know how to tell if your pet is in pain? Pets, especially cats, often hide symptoms and signs of pain. A veterinarian at the University of Montreal created the Feline Grimace Scale to help visually identify when a cat is in pain.

The Amy Karch Memorial Pet Blood Bank is looking for pet blood donors! We have seen such success in this program providing the necessary blood products for pets in our hospital, as well as helping other hospitals when they have pets in need. We are looking for pet donors of good temperament (one who doesn't mind a trip to the vet ) and who are in good health. A recommendation from your pet's regular veterinarian is REQUIRED to make sure that all pet's within the program are healthy. A screening process is required for donors before entering the program! If you have any questions, please email [email protected] for more information!

Plant Toxicity Many plants can cause an upset tummy if your pet has a large amount, but some plants and flowers are much more dangerous than others. There are many, but these are some more common ones. Lilies, azaleas, and oleander are a few flowers to avoid. Also, be careful with fertilizers or composts around your pet; The severity of this toxicity depends on the active ingredients, how much your pet ingested and if there are any additives present such as pesticides. Black ...walnuts are not good for pets, but after falling they can also mold which adds an additional harm. Tomato plants are much more dangerous than the tomatoes themselves, because they contain solanine which in large amounts is toxic. The seeds of apples and crabapples contains cyanide, so a slice of apple is ok as a treat, but the core can be deadly! Extra: Did you know that poison ivy effects dogs much less than humans? Your dog can get into poison ivy and have no issues, but the oil can transfer from their fur to your skin and give you a rash! Animal poison control can guide you with plenty of information on their website if you want to look before planting anything in your home garden! If you are worried that your pet has gotten into something toxic, give us a call at 424-1277.
