As coronavirus cases rise swiftly around the country, surpassing both the spring and summer surges, health officials brace for a coming wave of hospitalizations and deaths. Knowing which hospitals in which communities are reaching capacity could be key to an effective response to the growing crisis. That information is gathered by the federal government but not shared openly with the public. NPR has obtained documents that give a snapshot of data the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services collects and analyzes daily. Complete coverage http://ow.ly/82sI50C7Adn

Most of the attention this election season has been focused on the Presidential campaign, but there are also a significant number of New York State Senate races in play. Democrats need just two more seats to gain a super majority that could potentially override any vetoes of legislation issued by Governor Andrew Cuomo. Complete coverage: http://ow.ly/Yhbu50C7poT

Murphy Bannerman first noticed the posts this summer in a Facebook group called Being Black in Arizona. Someone started posting memes full of false claims that seemed designed to discourage people from voting. The memes were "trying to push this narrative of, 'The system is a mess and there's no point in you participating,' " Bannerman said. She recalled statements such as, " 'Democrats and Republicans are the same. There's no point in voting.' 'Obama didn't do anything for y...ou during his term, why should you vote for a Democrat this time around?' Complete coverage at http://ow.ly/DHWi50C7uFX

Despite a legacy of low turnout, college students and young people in general could be a decisive voting bloc in this election. Already, nearly 5 million Americans, ages 18 to 29, have cast early votes, a far higher number than at this point in 2016. But will this fall's pandemic campus experience upend optimistic projections for a college student turnout? Full coverage: http://ow.ly/V7qV50C7j1q

Those who’ve passed by the corner of South Salina and Colvin Streets have probably noticed a few tables and signs set up outside of the storefront across from the post office. If you find yourself fighting with a friend over politics, or frustrated and furious with your nearest and dearest over whom they're supporting for president, you're hardly alone. A recent survey shows just how much the nation's bitter political divide is causing social splintering and taking a toll on friendships. Even decades-long relationships have been caving under the pressure, giving new meaning to "social distancing." NPR's Tovia Smith reports http://ow.ly/v8es50C5tJR

Every second spent in prison is a "measurement of punishment," says Nicole R. Fleetwood. "You wake up, you're being punished, you're being punished, you make art, you're being punished." Fleetwood is curator of "Marking Time: Art in the Age of Mass Incarceration," a new exhibition at New York City's MoMa PS1. Full story at http://ow.ly/EaDD50C5taV

A study published in The New England Journal of Medicine that found female primary care physicians spend more time with their patients than male doctors an average of 2.4 minutes per visit, to be specific. But female physicians still make less money. That 2.4 minutes may seem inconsequential. But the New England Journal study authors argue that the extra time female physicians spend with their patients adds up quickly and has profound implications for the pay gap between women and men. The previous episode of City Limits examined efforts in the Syracuse community to use art to heal the emotional wounds created by instances of racial injustice, police brutality, and social unrest. In that episode, you heard voices of members of the Black Artist Collective, an organized group of black artists dedicated to enhancing the growth and endurance of all Black arts. Representatives of the group sat with Joe Lee to explore the intersection of art and activism and their fight to create a permanent seat at the table. Listen at citylimitsproject.org
