Since forming in 1986, the Walton Theatre Preservation Committee has made much progress some very visible and some not at all. Some of its first efforts were to restore the lobby, which involved stripping years of appalling paint colors; duplicating the Dutch door of the ticket office; stripping up a glued-down cheap carpet to reveal the original tile floor; carpeting the aisles and the foyer and painting most of the woodwork throughout the theatre. Our work continues, des...pite the pandemic and the theatre’s closed doors. Our balcony project is coming along, with seats removed, floors refinished, new sound and light boxes built and installed, and new seating being assembled and placed. Customized, engraved brass seat plaques are still available for purchase and make meaningful, unique holiday gifts. Balcony seat plaques cost $100 and main floor seat plaques cost $250. Please include what you would like engraved onto the brass plaque, two lines of text maximum. Checks should be made out to the Walton Theatre Preservation Association (WPTA). We gratefully accept donations of any amount. Please send to the address below. Walton Theatre Preservation Association PO Box 1 Walton, NY 13856 Seat plaques can also be purchased online at waltontheatre.org. . . . and out of the ashes rose what was to become the Walton Theatre.

Walton Theatre 08.11.2020

The Walton Theatre was once part of the Smalley Theatre chain, a group of upstate theaters. They were downtown theaters located in small towns. They had locations in Cooperstown, Stamford, Sharon Springs, Camden, Delhi and of course, Walton. Of these theaters, the Walton location is the only one not closed or demolished. In 2018, Jim Pop Beers of Margaretville generously donated a Smalley’s movie poster to the Theatre. Enjoy this look back to the donation being received by Ji...m Richardson of the Walton Theatre Preservation Committee. Interestingly, the Delhi Theater started its life out as a church before it was renovated into an Opera House. By 1914, the same year the Walton Theatre opened, the Delhi location was showing films. It hosted some of the same celebrities as Walton, such as the cowboy star Tom Mix. The Walton Theatre was part of the Smalley’s chain until 1957 when it was taken over by the Harden Theatre Chain. #WaltonTheatre #WaltonTheatreRestoration #MusicontheDelaware #DelawareCountyNY #WesternCatskills #PreserveOurHistory #OldTheatres #History #waltontheatrepreservationboard
