BASS GUITAR Proud instructor post. I am so pleased to watch the growth of an awesome bass student. Ranking at the top in her auditions and earning a sizable scholarship to Berklee, came as a result of more than just applying numerous tools and techniques.... Many advanced students will find their way to me and show how well they read and apply a variety of impressive techniques. Some will arrive with excellent timing skill, but look confused when I stop them and ask what about the groove? Once we identify the need to address this, I stress how important it is to understand the role other instruments are playing at any given moment and feel what a song / lyrics are trying to convey, in order to be conversational and support the intended feeling. I ask each student why they listen to music and what each style they enjoy makes them feel? I then ask them to recall those feelings every time they pick up the instrument and let it guide them, each time they practice and play. Learning how and not just what to practice is key. I also want to thank Tony Markellis who probably doesn’t know how he has inspired what I emphasize with students, including a technique he uses that allows his notes to rise and bloom, seemingly from nowhere when he does it. That’s a topic in itself.

Excited to resume our July Rock Camp! (Socially-distanced, yet still rockin’!)

I wrote this as I walked out the cabin door, looking onto the field a few years back. Gradual vocal cord damage rendered me unable to sing without pain or in pitch, so I will share some while I can.
