Located on the Washington Spy Trail, the Heckscher Museum of Art in Huntington is a hidden cultural gem that opened to the public 100 years ago. This year the museum is celebrating with its newly opened exhibit: Tracing History, Inspiring the Future that details important acquisitions to its collection along the way. Revolutionary War era spies here helped channel George Washington the secrets he needed about British troop movement to help turn the tide of the war. Then, during the Gilded Age, the North Shore became a retreat for some of the country’s wealthiest individuals, who built European-caliper mansions and castles along its shores. Prohibition didn’t stop Long Islanders from imbibing. Rum-runners and bootleggers ran rampant, ferrying spirits to different locations along the Long Island Sound. There’s a lot to explore. Come out and learn the fascinating history of some of Huntington’s earliest residents during Huntington Historical Society’s popular Old Burying Ground Walking Tours. The cemetery was established after the Town’s 1653 founding, and you’ll find stunning folk art and beautiful epitaphs, while listening to stories of Huntington’s rich history. On June 10 from 4:00-4:30, you can join Dr. Peter Koo for an online lecture, suitable for adults and high school students, as he explores Understanding Gene Regulation Through Deep Learning.
