Washingtonville Police would like to congratulate all the police officer handlers and K9’s that graduated from the Orange County Sheriff’s K9 Academy this morning with DCJS certification as police patrol K9’s. Today is an important day for WPD in particular because Officer Mendez and K9 Jax are our department’s first K9 Unit. We are especially proud of the hard work that they have both put in and look forward to working with K9 Jax and welcoming him into our police departmen...t family. Officer Mendez and K9 Jax will start narcotics detector school in November but are now trained and certified in obedience, agility, building searches, area searches, criminal apprehension, tracking and scent detection evidence searching. We would like to thank our Village Board, Mayor Joseph Bucco, Deputy Mayor Paul Lang, Trustee Richard Calore, Trustee Valerie Laudato, Trustee Laurisa Sampson as well as past Trustee Diane Mack for your support and trust with starting this program. Starting a K9 program has been talked about for many years between the Police Department and Village Board but it has never come to fruition. Last year when it was brought up again to the Village Board, they listened and we worked together to make it a reality. You can follow Jax on Instagram at wpd_k9jax

**Traffic Alert** Tomorrow with the start of Taft Elementary and Washingtonville Middle School we are expecting a larger number of vehicles dropping off and picking up students. Please be mindful of delays, traffic congestion and drive safely. Washingtonville Police will be monitoring the morning and afternoon traffic in the center of the Village as well the area near both schools. Things to remember.... Taft School both in the AM and PM we ask that you make a RIGHT TURN ONLY when exiting the rear parking lot driveway onto Toleman Road. No Parking, stopping or standing on Toleman Road. Middle School both in the AM and PM we ask that you make a RIGHT TURN ONLY when exiting the front driveway of the Middle School onto West Main Street (Route 94). Vehicles are not allowed to park, stop or stand on West Main Street especially in the area of Betty’s County Kitchen. When vehicles are trying to enter the Middle School and stop on the shoulder of the roadway, vehicles are unable to proceed westbound and it causes congestion and passing vehicles to cross the double yellow line and enter into the opposite lane of traffic. Please arrive early, use alternate routes of travel and use nearby parking lots. Welcome back WCSD students and staff!
