Water Authority of Western Nassau County 16.12.2020

The Water Authority of Western Nassau County is monitoring the coronavirus (COVID-19) situation and working in conjunction with the Nassau County Department of Health has implemented Emergency Plan procedures to minimize the risk of COVID-19 exposure. We will use these precautionary measures to ensure the timely and effective operation, maintenance, and repair of our water system, as well as insure the continued safety and health of our employees and the public. It is importa...nt for you to know that the COVID-19 virus has not been detected in drinking water supplies. Based on current evidence, the risk to water supplies is low. Requirements established by the EPA and the Department of Health prevent waterborne pathogens such as viruses from contaminating drinking water. COVID-19 is a type of virus that is particularly susceptible to disinfection and standard treatment. According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) conventional water treatment methods, such as those in use at most municipal drinking water systems, should remove or inactivate the virus that causes COVID-19. The Water Authority continues to adhere to these treatment requirements and our water continues to meet all current federal and state drinking water standards. In an effort to focus on the safety of our customers and employees, we are implementing the following steps at this time: *We are suspending all non-essential customer appointments and deferring all service shut-offs. *We are limiting public access to the Water Authority’s offices and no walk-in customer payments will be accepted at this time. Customers may continue to make payments online and via telephone. *We have increased the cleaning and disinfection of our work spaces, and have scheduled electrostatic disinfection of our offices. *We are in the process of modifying employee work schedules to balance continued service requirements and minimize the possibility of the spread of coronavirus. *Procedures are in place to allow for certain employees to work from home whenever possible. *Policies have been implemented for employees to remain home to care for themselves and/or family members who show symptoms of acute respiratory illness. As always, should an emergency arise, please contact the Water Authority immediately. Customers can continue to call (516) 327-4100 with any questions regarding water service.

September 4, 2019 - The Well 25A reconstruction project has been completed and the well is scheduled to be placed back in service this evening. When a previously unused well is placed back into service, it may result in localized discolored water in the general area. The Water Authority will be monitoring the area to avoid and/or minimize any issues. Well 25A is located on in the south section of Elmont as shown in the map below. If discoloration does occur, the water will co...ntinue to be safe and pose no health risks. Discolored water usually results when sediment on the bottom of water mains is disturbed by a reversal in the direction of water flow or a sudden change in pressure. When the flow equalizes, the water will clear up as the sediment settles out of the water. If you experience any discoloration, to let your cold water faucet run for at least 15 minutes until the water runs clear. Customers should refrain from using hot water until their cold water clears and avoid doing any laundry until the water clears. If the problem persists, please contact the Water Authority at (516) 327-4100. https://drive.google.com/open
