To commemorate Black History Month, we are kicking off a series honoring the history of Black artists and theater-makers. We recognize that Black History does not end when February does, and we will use this series not as a limited run, but as a starting point to share a bit of the knowledge we are learning and teaching in our classrooms. We begin by highlighting Lorraine Hansberry’s A Raisin in the Sun, which the Waterwell Drama Program Freshman grade just finished analyzing... in class. A Raisin in the Sun premiered in 1959, and it was the first play by a Black woman to be performed on Broadway. To read our full post about the impact of A Raisin of Sun, and other useful links, please go to http://bit.ly/honoringhansberry CLICK THROUGH for the set design that our Freshman, Mia Soleil Jacquez, made for her A Raisin in the Sun assignment, plus more images of Lorraine and the original Broadway cast.

As we transition to a new presidential administration, we look back at the past four years with this New York Times article about how theater stepped up to meet the Trump Era. We are grateful that Laura Collins-Hughes counts Waterwell’s THE COURTROOM among so many incredible artists and projects who used theater and media as a way to respond to urgent civic, social, and economic questions as they emerged. We look forward to continuing that work in a new political era. https://www.nytimes.com//18/thea/theater-in-trump-era.html
